Question Someone smack me...

...and tell me to take this job I've been offered:

When I quit Celadon in the beginning of March, I had every intention of never going back out OTR. I put in tons of applications, including with the local Teamsters hall. I had a few interviews and such. My first local job was with the company driving a mud truck for the gas wells. After having 20 hour days, I said the hell with that after a week and a half (those jack@sses STILL haven't paid me). Needing to get back to work after a week or so after I quit that place, I came to the company I'm at now. I'm out during the week and home weekends. The money isn't bad at all (best I've made driving so far).

Now's where I need advice:

Literally 2 days after I started here, I started getting calls from the Teamsters, needing a local driver for a natural-gas pipeline job. Of course, being that I just started here, I had to decline. Well, they're STILL calling me. In fact, they called me this evening, Sunday, at 9:30pm needing a driver. He said if I could be there tomorrow morning they would put me to work immediately. This was the first time I had a couple minutes to talk to him, so I asked a few questions. The pay rate is $19.50/hr. They're working 5 10's and 1 8 hour shifts per week, with everything over 40hrs a week as overtime. Also, once the job crosses into Pennsylvania, the pay rate goes up to $27.50/hr. The staging area for this job is withing 5, maybe 10 minutes of my house.

I'm torn here. The money is fantastic, set hours every day, nion benefits, etc. The downside is that the job will stop in December for winter, then resume in the spring (April, probably). It would also be my FOURTH job in under 6 months.

So, what should I do?

Now that's funny!

Mal, you're way too Republican to join the teamsters. But imagine making that good money for 8 months and sitting home and collecting unemployment through the winter. Sounds like a liberal's paradise, welcome aboard.

How the hell did my question turn into a political thing? I hate politics. I just want to make money.

As for sitting @ home for 4 months collecting unemployment, that would drive me insane. I'm sure I could find a temporary job while waiting on the call-back.

BTW - as far as the Obama comments, I'm one of the West Virginian's that voted for the inmate in Texas over Obama.

i say do it but.. there is no set instone that they'll take you back. a lot of my family is in the teamsters and it took them a real long time (close to 10 years for some) to get steady work. also did you ask about the annuities?

Make sure that YOU will start back in April, not just that the job opens back up in April. Money sounds great, but it take a certain kind of non-motavated person to be happy with some union jobs .. can you do JUST your job AND NOTHING ELSE? I mean don't even pick up a tool that a non union worker dropped and hand it to him, you may be in volation of union rules.
I know of a union shop here in Rochester and on Super Bowl Sunday so many driver called in sick most laods couldn't go out and the union wouldn't let any other cdl holders take them cause they're not listed as drivers!
I couldn't work like that but if you can take the job and don't look back.

I know when i worked ina union shop we could help each other out. I used to help the laborers. Handed them tools etc. when they are in the ditch. Small stuff like that.
