It's really depressing to see how our justice system sometimes works. If these people are convicted again, there's a good chance they won't get the full 40-year sentence. Given the messy system that exists in Virginia, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting a lot less, maybe 15 to 20 years. But even then, half of that sentence could be probation, so they could end up serving only 7 to 10 years. And there's a good chance they'll even get out after 5 years. It's frustrating to think that you can get 7 years for throwing a McFlurry at a car, but someone who repeatedly breaks the law and causes a fatal accident while drunk can only get 5 years. Hopefully the judge in Caroline County is different than judges in neighboring counties and will give a fair sentence.
