Cargo thefts rise during holiday weekends, especially over Thanksgiving

While many workers will take a day or two off this week for Thanksgiving, security experts say cargo thieves steal more on long weekends than any other time of the year.
Freigh****ch International, a logistics security firm, recently issued cargo theft statistics to remind trucking and warehouse operations that cargo theft incidents go up 28 percent during holiday weekends.
“Thieves are especially active over these periods for a variety of reasons, all largely stemming from the additional days that cargo is not in motion and often is left unguarded,” Freigh****ch said in a recently released special report on holiday cargo theft.
During Thanksgiving 2010, Freigh****ch recorded 14 cargo theft incidents – more than any other holiday in 2010.
For cargo thefts during holidays between January 2009 and November 2010 that had identified theft locations, 34 of the 67 holiday weekend cargo theft incidents occurred at unsecured lots and truck stops, and 13 happened at “secured lots.”
In a news release, Freigh****ch said it “recommends drivers remain vigilant and maintain communication with their dispatch when stopped at high-risk areas such as truck stops and rest areas.”
“Loads should not be dropped or left unattended for any reason,” the company said.
