Hello all. Im looking for some advice and help on this site. Currently, I work as a para-transit operator for our local Transit Authority. However, I have been drawn to being an operator for a OTR coach company like Greyhound, etc. I do not have a CDL yet. My MVR is totally blank since I started driving. I am 23 now. No criminal background, and already possess some knowledge of basic operation and understanding of commercial vehicles. Seems like I may be a good candidate, right? Well, the worry that plagues me is the medication I take currently. I would like to receive your input on the feasibility of going for this career eventually. I take Celexa for my depression. It doesnt make me drowsy or anything like that. In fact, when I started this medicine, the Transit Authority Doctor cleared me to continue driving. I know this may not matter, since I am not a CDL operator, but maybe this will help in your advice you give me. I would simply like to know, is this a disqualifier in commercial driving? Either trucking OR bus operation. What do you think? I could really use some help. This is what I want to go for, and I hope I can one day. Thanks- Matt from Toledo, OH.

Thank you Freebird, and One for your input posts. To One, What can I say? I have a serious passion for transportation. It's been within me since I was just a boy, and it hasn't died. Plenty of people, especially family have told me "do better, do better than that". To me, it's not a matter of doing better. This is what I truly enjoy. Maybe I have low expectations in the eyes of other people. I can tell you one thing though. The aspirations I have are too strong to ignore. Greyhound would just be a start, a stepping stone. Trust me, I want to go far in the industry, just like any other 23 yr old wants to have years of degrees and school related awards. Thank you very much for posting anyway.

Sounds good! Just remember if there is anything else you are good at and enjoy, try it first..cuz once you are in the transportation industry its hard to get out of it..very hard. Unless you have too many accidents, then ur just screwed. Thanks for not bitching at me for being frank like many here do :P

I don't know anything about Celexa but I believe your asked about depression when getting a cdl or might be some Co. apps, I'm not sure. But it night be a problem and should be. Driving can be stressful enough toss in a strict time table, heavy traffic, one or two crying kids. You might handle it fine but would the bus line want to take that chance? If I was hiring I wouldn't. Have you considered another side of transportation such as dispatch, management ect? |
