Truck wreck on I-68 in WV today
#1
Just saw this on the local news. If you can, watch the video to see the condition of the truck - wow - talk about a major rollover. He wrecked on I-68 coming down the mountain after the weigh station at the top. I have a feeling he didn't consider that you REALLY should pay attention to the 50mph signs on that hill, especially since his truck ended up sitting right beside one of them.
One of the comments on the story page says he was driving eratically before the crash, as well. Ice Cream Truck Crashes on I-68 - WBOY-TV - WBOY.com

Between Coopers Rock and Cheat lake... That's downhill about all the way. And, in spite of the restricted speed limit, drivers have been known to let 'em roll. I have no idea how many times I've been passed going down that hill. Most of the drivers get by with it, but with each new success, they push the envelope a bit more until this happens. I never thought of that as a good stretch of road to run without a good engine brake. It's not one of the places where you want to hit the bottom doing triple digits, and I'm sure there are always a couple that do.

Before I had my CDL, I was in my car coming down the hill. There was fairly heavy traffic heading west so I was in the passing lane. I looked in the rear-view and saw a truck coming up on me fast, with his brakes smoking. At the time, I was doing 65-70mph. The only thing I could do was to go faster because of the traffic in the right lane. When I went around the turn at the bottom of the hill at the lake, I was probably doing 125-130 easily. The speedo only registered up to 105, and it was well past that. The truck made it around the turn, but he headed right for the shoulder to stop after the truck lost it's momentum. Seen way too many wrecks coming down that hill.

You're right. Even though I've lived in the area for 40 of my 44 years and have seen literally dozens of trucks wreck on that mountain, I shouldn't have jumped the gun. Maybe a rabbit walked onto the road in front of him and he swerved to avoid it. Or, maybe he came up on another truck that was doing the 50mph on the hill and couldn't get around him so he had to go into the ditch to avoid it.

All I saw was a "Schwanns" vendor truck....no sign of a "tractor trailer" in the video. Maybe the "tractor trailer" disintegrated??

Looked like a tractor trailer to me, especially with the number of cartons of ice cream laying around. Besides, they said the truck rolled multiple times. The cab appears to be a Cascadia, from what I can tell, anyway.

Let's just say it took me awhile to do my business. To top it off, I was in a little Chevy Monza at the time. Hell, I could almost do a Smokey and the Bandit stunt and drive UNDER the trailer in that car. I'm just glad that car had enough power to go that fast because that was literally my only option at the time.

Ok. There is a chance that he may have had mechanical failure. I've had the shifting linkage come apart for me coming down off of Sibling Hill. No engine brake, not even the engine. Neutral all the way down. And,when I got to the bottom, I had enough smoke coming off the brakes that you couldn't even see the truck. But, in all the years I've been driving, that has only happened once. And, in that time, I can't tell you how many times I drove that road. I can't even tell you how many times it was in the last year I was driving. With my own driving, it comes out to less than .01%. Now, giving him those odds, there's a pretty good chance he was simply letting it roll down the hill. Like about a one in ten thousand shot that he had a mechanical failure. 9,999 in ten thousand that it was driver error. I call 'em as I see 'em. And, I'm not perfect. I could be wrong.
