I've seen male dogs that will attack a child, any child. I've owned one myself. First, I put a muzzle on him, then I put him down. It wasn't a pit bull. It was a golden retriever. I've also seen the same thing in a german shepard. I've also seen a rotwieler that laid still while a 3-year-old sat on him, pulled his ears and all manner of things, but let an adult touch him the wrong way and he bared his teeth.
I get to play with several pit bulls every day that are nothing more than overgrown puppies. 5 and 7 year old kids play with them every day and they're very protective of the kids. Don't try to grab one of the kids by the arm while the dog sees it or you'll get ripped to shreds. It's not the breed, it's the mentallity of the each dog.
The mentallity of those dogs should have been checked before they were allowed within range of any child up to the age of about 15 or older. Again... Any dog needs to have the mentallity checked. Not just pit bulls.
