Comments made in 1955
Comments made in the year 1955!
(That's only 54 years ago!)
'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible
To buy a week's groceries for $20.00.
'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year?
It won't be long before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one.
'If cigarettes keep going up in price,
I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.
'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?
'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00,
Nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store. '
'When I first started driving,
Who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon..
Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.
'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more.
Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND,
It seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.
'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century.
They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .
'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball?
It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.
'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric.
They are even making electric typewriters now.
'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays..
I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet..
'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone
To watch their kids so they can both work.
'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.
'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes.
I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.
'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather,
But I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.
'There is no sense going to Lincoln orOmaha anymore for a weekend,
It costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.
'No one can afford to be sick anymore,
At $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'
'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

And, if you think about how some of these things have gone up, if our income had kept up on a percentage basis, we'd be making half a million a year now.

No kidding with that. When I started driving 9 years ago, the pay rates for company drivers were exactly the same as they are now.

My dad smoked growing up. I remember him saying that he would quit when prices went up to $0.35/pack. He kept saying that every time the price went up. He only stopped smoking about 5 years before his death. He didn't stop because of the money. It was either stop or smoke outside the house.
Wages don't need to go up as long as the price of consumables stay the same. Unfortunately, the price of everything continues to go up. When I started driving in the early 1970's an otr driver could make about $300/week at $0.10/mile. That was a very good living.

When I started driving, I was making .28/mile. A couple of years later, it went up to .32/mile. Today, there are a whole lot of companies that are still paying .32/mile. The drivers can't make it on that anymore. But, some of those same companies also would not make it if they paid more. Just like all the companies that went out of business when the fuel prices spiked.

Pay is relative to the cost of living. Rates were regulated when I first started to drive. You could not just request authority and have it granted. It was a process than often resulted is a cost of thousands of dollars and even after spending all that money you were still not guaranteed authority. It was easier to get a driving job then. Basically, all you had to do was either be working for a company or ask for a job and you were often made a driver on the spot. Deregulation resulted in more carriers and more competition which lowered rates. With lower rates comes lower wages. No company can afford to pay wages that are too high and still survive. About the only way to get wages up is to raise rates. That isn't likely to happen with so much competition and a down economy. If rates were regulated then wages might begin to come up. Even with the difficult times, I would not want to see that happen. I prefer a free market.
