well folks me again, everyones unfavorite person to inform you that i have shredded my cdl. It was still good for 1 more year as of the date of this post. I have called, begged and pleaded each and every trucking company out there to hire me, with no luck whatsoever. Since i held a out of state cdl from the state i currently reside in, each trucking company told me the same thing, without a cdl from the state you reside in, we cannot hire you at this time, which is bogus (in my honest opinion). To add injury to insult to that, i have been out of a truck for 1 1/2 years now which is also hurting my chances.

without further adue, i am leaving class a drivers and every other trucking web site i belong too.

Wouldn't it have made sense to just get a CDL in the state you're residing in? In fact, isn't it the law in most states that you have 90 days to get your license changed over?

30 days from the time it was issued. Anyway, with illinois making it even more harder on CDL holders who travel out of state to attend an out of state CDL school, when you come back to illinois, they EXPECT you to do the whole thing over again, written tests (done on the computer) and the skills (driving) tests. To add injury to insult to that, you have to go to an in-state school on average of 6 weeks, relearn everything, don't believe me, go to a dmv here in illinois and they will let you know themselves.

Was your's, one of those fake CDL's that Illinois issued a few years ago??? Is that why the state wants you to re-do CDL training? Otherwise....The entire purpose for the CDL program, was so "Truckdrivers" could move from one state to another, without having to "reprove" their skills and knowledge. Just go to the proper agency and switch your license from the "old" state to the "new" state.
It was also to illiminate drivers holding multiple drivers licenses from multiple states..as was common practice in the 60's, 70's, and into the 80's.

Maybe you should relinquish your CDL. However...shreding it does not remove it from the system. You have to go to the appropriate agency and surrender it, then have it down graded to a "Class C" license.

Grandfathering Provision:

States have the option to "grandfather" drivers with good driving records from the skills test according to the following criteria:

Driver has a current license at time of application; and Driver has a good driving record and previously passed an acceptable skills test; or driver has a good driving record in combination with certain driving experience .

"Good driving record" means:

A driver can certify that, during the 2-year period immediately prior to applying for a CDL he/she:

Has not had more than one license;
Has not had any license suspended, revoked, or canceled;
Has not had any convictions in any type of motor vehicle for major disqualifying offenses;
Has not had more than one conviction for any type of motor vehicle for serious traffic violations;
Has not had any violation of State or local law relating to motor vehicle traffic control arising in connection with any traffic accident, and has no record of an accident in which he/she was at fault.

"Driving experience" means :

A driver can certify and provide evidence that:

He/she is regularly employed in a job requiring operation of CMV, and that either:
He/she has previously taken a behind-the-wheel skills test in a representative vehicle; or
He/she has operated a representative vehicle for at least 2 years immediately preceding application for a CDL.

As he stated, he's been out of work for 1 1/2 years. He would have to retake the test.
