I lived in Alaska for 14 years, assigned up there in the Army...Ft Wainwright, Fairbanks. During that time I've driven it round trip 8 times, last time was 5 years ago to move my daughter down. 1st trip was 1978, lots of dirt/gravel...last trip mostly pavement..but, to be perfectly honest the road was smoother in the dirt/gravel strips. GREAT trip though and you'll enjoy it. I put some plastic shields over my headlights to protect them from rocks and a hogwire 1/4" mesh out front of the grill to keep from getting a hole in the radiator. Last trip I flew up and drove back the daughters car...was in June...no headlight protection, no radiator protection...just the car...no problems at all. Take your camera for sure...and watch out for the occasional bear, moose, caribou, and buffalo you might see crossing the road. I'm jealous...take your time and enjoy.
