The American Trucking Association says there are plenty of jobs; the long haul sector alone is short about 20,000 drivers.

The only two groups of people more out of touch with the reality of what is going on in the trucking industry than the ATA are the dispatchers and the government.
Of course probably 85% of the info the government uses to make decisions comes from the ATA. The ATA has been spouting that there is 10's of thousands of empty driving jobs for years and years, but if that was true freight rates would be a lot higher, drivers would not spend time sitting waiting for a load assignment, and trucking companies would pretty much be kissing a drivers back side to keep them. I have know drivers all my life and drove for many years myself and I have yet to see or hear that happening. The ATA represents trucking companies and the only reason they keep spouting this is they continue to hope to get truck driving listed on the Dept of Labors list of jobs that can't be filled with domestic help so they can bring in foreign labor at a lot lower pay rate.

Now I think I'm gonna puke:
In Hard Times, Trucking Keeps On Truckin' - Sacramento News Story - KCRA Sacramento With all these news articles about how "Great" trucking is doing, it seems like they would be interviewing an actual truck driver:roll: Oh wait, the OTR guys are too busy running those cross country, high-dollar loads, and the local guys are too busy fighting traffic, customers, and busy warehouses and rock quarries to stop for an interview, that's it. Hell, I'll even let them interview me, I got plenty of time, I haven't seen my job in almost 2 months. issedoff:The reason that the turn over rate may have dropped is because the drivers that have a job are holding on to them with both hands. And good luck to all those new drivers, who are dropping (probably their last) 5 grand on a great career change.

I couldn't help myself either, Stan. I wrote a letter to her too. I don't expect to hear from her but I felt the need to set the record straight. Regardless of this situation perhaps she will think twice and give more thought to the next story she does about this industry. Perhaps she could actually interview a real driver next time.
