Hugh is even fatter and uglier in hd.
You need a HD reciever. You probably already have a HD reciever from your cable or sat service. They make both HD and non HD recievers. If the TV has one built in you can use it with a regular antenna and watch local TV right thru your antenna in perfect HD. The built in reciever is capable of tuning your HD cable but the cable company scrambles it so you need their reciever. I would assume Sat TV does the same thing. Bottom line is unless you only want local TV in HD then yes you need a reciever.

Misc. Questions:
*Would a 37" widescreen have a taller screen that a 32"?
Yes, if the 32 inch is also wide-screen.
*Are HDMI Cables the equivilent of the "old skool" red-yellow-white cables for hooking up things, or are HDMI cables something totally different.
No, HDMI is sound and video vs. composite (old skool).
*Are HDMI cables really necessary/better to get the best possible image?
Yes, better imagine and sound. Don't spend more than 20 bucks because it is digital. Gold plated ends on the HDMI cables don't make a difference because it is digital where as the composite (old skool) is analog.
*Is there any brand of tv I should stay clear of, or are they pretty much "all built the same" such as the old timers say.
All pretty much the same as far as name brands.

If you want HDTV channels over cable or dish, you have to subscribe to HDTV channels. Available in HDTV means you have to subscribe the HDTV channel of cable or dish. If it is over air (rabbit ears) you still have to go to the channel that broadcasts in HDTV.HTH

Well I wouldnt say hypnotized yet.
I went yesterday and got the 37" element for $500 from Circuit City.
I hooked it up last night, but it dont look NEARLY as good as it did in the store, I'm assuming because they had HD running through them and I dont yet. I'm should win an HD receiver on ebay today for a pretty good price, so as soon as I get that, I can sign up for HD service.

They had five 37" tv's all in a row and I thought that the one I got looked just as good as any of the other ones they had. once I get the HD service, I'll be happier.
Oh yeah, and the PS3 the wife is gettin me for christmas. That'll rock...I havent played Madden of Nascar in like 3 years when I broke my ps2.

Unless you bought a TV that isn't HD ready (which I highly doubt), you shouldn't need that unless you use an antenna. Your cable/satellite provider will set you up for HD service

I believe he said he has Direct Tv,which in fact he will have to have an HD reciever to recieve the HD programming from Direct Tv.

As long as it is 1080p or i then it will look as good as anything else, where you might notice a difference is the refresh rate, sometimes on the "cheaper" models they have trouble keeping up with fast motion (sports) but you won't care because it is still the best tv you will have every seen.
