Default A good reason to avoid the TWIC System

This is mostly for independents, or those who act that way.
You know of one driver that hasn't bothered...

Patrick J. Hemphill, manager of port security for the Port of Wilmington, said the system will self-destruct.

"What the government doesn't get is these truckers who don't have cards and can't unload will shut the economy down," he said.
Like his colleagues -- from terminal operators to oil refiners and cocoa bean distributors -- Casper called the law impractical.

There comes a time when free people need to stand up and be counted. I spoke with someone a couple of weeks ago who told me that only a small percentage of drivers have bothered to pay the TWIC tax. If enough drivers refuse to pay the fee they will need to either change their tactics or close the ports. There is absolutely NO reason for CDL holders to be required to have a background check in order to get a hazmat endorsement or ID card. We already go through a background check every time we renew our CDL's. There is no need for additional redundancy.
