And, I believe that Russia is very well aware of that. They may be massing troops and weapons at the Georgia Boarder, but I don't think it will go any farther than that. They may not be happy with what's going on in Poland, but I don't think it will come to a discharge of weapons. They know perfectly well that if they start throwing nuclear weapons into it, they can expect to have them thrown back at themselves. The U S is not the only country in NATO that has nuclear capabilities and I really don't think they are willing to take a chance on that. They might get North Korea involved, but Iran would sit back and watch the show. Not enough support to take that on. I'm not going to lose any sleep over that one because I don't think it will happen.

 

Putin is a nationalist. And the Russians still have a very sour taste in their mouth from collapsing and loosing East Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Latvia, Georgia and a few others that are now independent and enjoy freedom. (Although Belarus is run by a very pro Moscow PM.)
When the collapse occurred Washington and NATO agree not to expand NATO east of Germany. We have now the Czech Republic and Poland in NATO, maybe a couple others. Ukraine, the “bread basket of the former Soviet Union� also wants admission into NATO and the EU. Yushenco is very pro west, although there are still remnants of the old soviet guard there that want ties to Moscow instead of the west. But the USA has pretty much ignored Ukraine in terms of economic assistance, (another of scrub Bush’s big mistakes.) The EU also to some degree, primarily because if Ukraine is part of the EU, Ukraine has the capacity to feed all of Europe. The last thing the big corporate mega farms want in western Europe is cheaper food. (similar to here.)
But, back to Georgia, this little squabble is about oil. There is a major east -west pipeline through the center of Georgia, built and owned by the west. There are about 4 others, which meander through the country also, these are Russian built. These pipelines run primarily through South Oletssilia (sp) and the other Yuv something to the Black Sea ports. Russia has a huge reserve of oil. They wish to capitalize on their new found wealth, and be a world player again. Holding up and controlling oil makes them one. They have done it before in Ukraine and their other former countries, which also supplies Eastern Europe.
Their thinking is if the US can invade Iraq because of oil, they can invade Georgia because of oil. “Tit for tat.� And they also know the US is stretched so thin militarily, there is nothing we can do. Except send Condolezza on another failed mission.
This escapade into Georgia is a serious threat, and it also serves as a loud warning shot across the bows of state of Ukraine and Poland. Putin and Russia will only tolerate so much “independence� from their former surrogates.
Putting missiles in Poland was another big strategic blunder from scrub Bush, any rational or semi intelligent person would know the Russian reaction to this action, especially Putin’s.
There is also the matter of Russia’s Black Sea fleet based in the Crimea. Which with western urging, Ukraine wants them out. These events, allowed to simmer, could become a huge and most serious problem for millions of freedom loving people.
But such events, very well indeed should play into McCain’s hands for the election.

 

Well, Russia is throwing more fuel onto the fire. IF they want us, they are trying real hard to get us in the ring. Today they captured more Georgian soldiers and in the process took 4 US humvees that were about to be shipped back to us after some war games with Georgia that we took part in. They just continue to thumb their nose at everyone. Remember, Putin is former KGB.......

I would be more surprised if Russia backs down without us amassing troops at the western Georgia border to show we mean business.

 

Georgia's west border is the Black Sea.
To the south and southwest is Turkey, in NO way will Turkey allow us to launch into Georgia. To the southeast is Armenia, and they want no part.
We could send a ship in, but the Russians have their entire Black Sea fleet in Simerpolol. crimea.

Basically, no one can do anything. Sit and wait, and hope they leave soon. Maybe some economic sanctions in the months ahead. Of course the Russians would prefer the President of Georgia out of the country. And control of the oil.

4 Humvees they can have, sure not worth fighting for and Putin knows it. He is no dummy. He is showing the west and NATO, along with the border CIS countries that also want in NATO, they are taking a big gamble. They (Russia) might suffer a few minor ecomnonic sanctions, but they have alot of oil. Enough to make it a very long cold and expensive winter for Europe and for the West to a smaller degree.

 

Historically, when the world goes into a recession or depression we get into a war.
