Default Why do they need to mention he was a trucker

Being a trucker out of work has absolutely nothing to do with what he did.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080729/...hurch_shooting

As a driver and an owner operator, I am appalled at what he did and feel strongly for the victims and the witnesses but what is the relevance to him being a truck driver. I highly doubt he did this cause he is out of work. Someone please help me understand?

The report said he was against liberals, but what's the relevance to him being a truck driver? Did I mis-read the story?

I re-read the story and they added to it. It now says he ONLY (emphasis added) has 2 drunk driving convictions for a criminal record. I wonder if this is why he can't get a job  .

I'm sure it's a contributing factor, but it sounds like he's had problems all his life. He was busted back to private before being discharged from the Army! Did you see his picture? Looked like Ted Kasynski when they found him. I think this guy was just too creepy and anti-social for MOST companies to hire him.

I didn't read the article when you posted it. I had already "skimmed" it on AOL, and seen it on the news. The article NOW "corrects" the number of injured to show that 2 were killed. I hadn't heard that on the news.

As for mentioning his status as an unemployed truck driver.... I know WE hate to hear that and feel its being emphasized, but in these kinds of attacks, they usually DO tell that info. Like, "he was a postal worker who'd lost his job, etc."

He's not the first, and unfortunately, I doubt he'll be the last. The fact that he was a truck driver is not a factor. The fact that he has had two DWIs would certainly keep the insurance companies from being willing to insure him, so that's why he was out of work, and not able to get a job. Flipping hambergers just wasn't good enough for him.

This is from the yahoo article..and does a little to explain why they put in his "truckdriver" reference.

The attack Sunday morning lasted only minutes. But the anger behind it may have been building for months, if not years.

"It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement," Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen said of Adkisson.

A police affidavit used to get a search warrant for Adkisson's home said the suspect admitted to the shooting.

Adkisson "stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country," investigator Steve Still wrote.

Adkisson was a loner who hates "blacks, gays and anyone different from him," longtime acquaintance Carol Smallwood of Alice, Texas, told the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Authorities said Adkisson's criminal record consisted of only two drunken driving citations. But court records reviewed by The Associated Press show that his former wife obtained an order of protection in March 2000 while the two were still married and living in the Knoxville suburb of Powell.
The article also had this as the final sentence;

Adkisson, who is due in court Aug. 5, was on active duty with the Army beginning in 1974. Army records show he was a helicopter repairman, rising from a private to specialist and then returning to private before being discharged in late 1977.

So now he's either a deranged trucker, or a deranged Vet.

Now, WAIT A MINUTE... I'm BOTH a deranged trucker, AND a deranged vet. And, I do not go around killing anyone. Don't go giving the rest of us a bad name just because he's simply deranged and being a trucker or being a vet has absolutely nothing to do with it.
