Default The Quitting Smoking Thread

Hey all,

I just quit smoking today. I've been planning this the last couple of weeks. My last smoke was last night. I made it today without a lot of trouble. I even had some beer this evening so I figure if I can make it through that I should be good.

I want to encourage people who are quitting smoking, want to quit, or have quit successfully to share their stories, thoughts, ideas, etc.

I will go light up a smoke in your honor.

Every time I try to quit, I do fine until I get stressed out.

Hey Colts Fan...not to be negative, but the couple times I tried to quit, I found the 1st day to be the easiest. 3-4 days is the most difficult.
Best wishes, hope you kick it. Buy lots of gum.

I quit cold turkey 8 years ago. 1st--3rd day is hard...then 4th--7th day you fight off psychological urges. Your chemical dependency is first, then your physical habit and routine. After that first week...you are good. You made it.

I smoked when I turned 21 for a few years and quit cold turkey...then picked it up again 12 years later. So...just because you quit for a long time...doesn't mean you are clear from the possibility to return.
After I picked them back up, I smoked for about 10 years until I quit this last time. I had tried cold turkey a couple times, before I finally got real mean about it to conquer.

If you can get past the first 3-5 days...you can go the distance. You will have cravings. Even after a year...and 2 years later...I fought cravings, but it gets to be less of a pull. 8 years later...I am disgusted by cigs, the smell, the very idea...but I also know it would only take one cig to return to a daily habit.

I think cold turkey is the way to go. But you really have to resolve yourself to quitting. The old "mind over matter" thing. You can do anything, if you put your mind to it.

Good luck...you can do it. You owe it to yourself to quit.

I just went to Wal Mart and bought a bunch of gum today. The real test is when I get back into the truck on Wed. morning.

The addiction to nicotine hsan't been so bad. It's the habit, especially when driving. I'm glad I've had the last few days off to "detox" before I get back into the truck. That way I can just concentrate on dealing with the habit part of it and not both at the same time.

Well, day 2 is in the books and no smoking. I have the day off tomorrow, then Wed. back to work on an overnight trip. Thanks to everyone for their encouragement.

Feel free to post on this thread with all matters quitting smoking related!
