I'll be nice and treat them all as one question, since they are all related.

1.What do you think about illegal immigration and its impact on the economy as well as our industry?
To be honest, I think that illegal immigration is the country's "dirty little secret". Sure, lots of guberment officials use it for sound bites, but it's quite clear that they are unwilling or unable to do anything about it. I think that the average US citizen has gotten soft, and is unwilling to do the job that the average illegal is doing.

I don't believe that illegals are going to take over the trucking industry, thanks to 9/11.

2.Where do you see irregular route OTR in the next 10 years?
I see it going mostly to the independents and the rails, where it should be. The rails will take over most of the non-crucial freight, and the independents will take over the critical freight.

3.What do you feel about lumpers and having to pay people to unload their own freight?
Since I employed lumpers for 99.9% of my HHG loads, I find them to be a necessary evil in certain segments of the industry. As long as carriers are willing to allow receivers to push them around, then nothing will change for everyone else. I find it ridiculous that carriers will pay a lumper more than they will pay their own driver to unload the same freight.

4.Do you feel that all these OTR companies decreasing speed is a saftey hazard?
No. I think everyone else not paying attention to their surroundings is the true safety hazard. Of course, in the lawsuit happy world we live in now, that really doesn't matter.

5.What was your opinion when the new hazmat restrictions were instituted? (ie,the "background check" along with the "fee")
I wish they would broaden it to include every aspect of the trucking industry, and not just hazmat. The tighter the restrictions they make on obtaining a CDL, the better qualified the drivers will be. The money will eventually follow.

6.Who started this imaginary "driver shortage"?
The large carriers, to justify their turnover rates to their stockholders. The industry publications bought it hook, line, and sinker, since most people in this industry are incapable of doing legitimate math.

On the lighter side, would you rather be Bruce Wayne (along with all the money, toys, and the very mortal Batman personae) or would you rather be the Clark Kent (along with the indestructable but lonely Superman?) If you want a third choice, you can be Wonder Woman's all-day, every-day boy toy, but you have to wash dishes and clean the house when she's out saving the world.

What prompted this sudden willingness to open yourself up?
