Make sure you check your brakes for proper adjustment also. Doesn't matter if you set them or not if they are out of whack.

Go into nearly any truck stop, and you will see at least one rig parked with the brake lights on. Instead of popping the button, they pulled the trolley bar and went to sleep. At any time, that can let go and they have no brakes set at all. I don't understand why they do that, but there always seems to be at least one that will.

I gotta story about setting your parking brakes, I'll try to make it short but I gotta share this one. My codriver that I dont drive with anymore shared a story with me the other day because now that its over he thought it was funny but at the time he said he almost had a heart attack. He said while he was driving (I was sleeping) he was getting a toll ticket or something like that forgot what he said he was reaching for but anyway he couldnt reach so he opens door and climbs down without putting on the parking brake and grabs it, soon as he turns around the truck is rolling backwards, luckily it was 3am so no one was behind us and he tries to jump back into the truck and he slips and falls to the ground. Meanwhile me (sleeping) and the truck are still rolling backwards, luckily we pull doubles and the two trailers kinda jackknifed and it broke one of the air hoses to the second trailer in half so it stopped the whole truck just in time because he said if it went any faster he wouldnt of been able to catch up to it. He finally decided to wake me up after sitting there for about 30 mins to regroup himself and he made up some story to me that the air hose just snapped in half which sounded fine to me at the time because I was still half asleep. So we had someone come fix the air hose and we went on our way, but he finally got the ballz to tell me 3mos. after it happened!

True dumbass story here. I stopped somewhere at the top of a mountain and decided to adjust my brakes before going off.
I honestly can't remember how I screwed up, but after it was all said and done, I got in the truck and realized that I had both sets of parking brakes released. Talk about a sick feeling in your gut to realize how close you just came to being run over by your own truck.
