No offense at all Double L, but doesnt he need to learn how to drive it first?? It's not something you can really "teach yourself".......Well I guess with enough time you could...Possibly, but I wouldnt recommend it.

But then again, what do I know.

even if he could find a truck to borrow or rent he would also need someone with a Class A CDL to go with him to the testing site. Can't do it on his own with only a permit.

And for the record, no Illinois does not provide vehicles for any road test.

I don't know if Double L already knows how to drive a rig or not. By his response, I offered an idea. Lots of N. Michigan guys know how to drive tractors, backhoes, caterpillers, etc. at a young age.

At the time, I didn't realize Star Rental is not in Illinois. Here in Michigan, Star will provide the Tractor/Trailer, insurance and the examiner...for about $250.
They also offer instruction by the hour, as well as they have a school you can enroll with.

Assuming you already know how to drive...you just show up at the yard, the day of your exam. The schedule for the exam usually takes a couple weeks. The examiner will set up a course at the yard. You do your pre-trip, and then the 4 basic course maneuvers, and then he jumps into the rig with you and off you go to do your road test. Takes about two hours all together.

All you need prior to your exam is a photo drivers license, training permit, (issued by the Sec. of State when you pass your written) and a D.O.T. Med card.

I don't know if there is a company like Star Rental in Illinois or not.

I don't know Double L's particular circumstances, or limitations. I don't know how many companies will even hire an 18 year old driver. But there is work available for a determined young man. Up here Construction and Farms will hire for limited duties, and I've seen young guys working the yards, and shuttling trailers to be loaded. I have enough trouble keeping up with the details of my own life, but I trust Double L to make good decisions, from what I have learned about him.

Double L has been on this message board a while asking questions and learning, and I think that is great. Reminds me of Mack2. Another young driver who has his shiet together at a young age.

Good luck and God bless Double L. Good to see you again...

I been calling alot of dump carriers and they told me you had be 21-23 with experience. Now that was a shocker! I figured that would be the easiest place to get a driving job. But like I said Mid-West Sanitary hires at 18 and it's just a matter of getting my CDL. I also called Peterbilt since my application is still on file to see what they have available. I still got a sour taste in my mouth from Ee-Jay.

I'd tell you to go to a HHG agent in St Louis, but I already mentioned that. I got my permit on my own for 60 bucks (IL state fees) and used an Atlas Van Lines truck. When summer comes to an end, this option's door may close for you.

Just sayin
