chicagotribune.com Truck driver in CTA crash dies months after accident Two people died, 21 were injured in April at Cermak-Chinatown station By Monique Garcia Tribune reporter 10:07 PM CDT, June 14, 2008 The driver of a semitrailer truck that crashed into a crowded CTA Red Line station in April, killing two people, has died. Donald L. Wells, 64, of Metamora, Mich., died at 6:45 p.m. Friday according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. It is unclear whether Wells died of injuries related to the crash, and the medical examiner's office did not immediate list a cause of death pending further police investigation. Chicago police confirmed Saturday that Wells died. The crash happened during Friday evening rush hour on April 25 when Wells barreled off the Dan Ryan Expressway exit ramp, through a busy intersection and into the Cermak-Chinatown CTA train station.Killed in the crash were Eloisa Guerrero, 47, and Delisia Brown, 18; 21 others were injured. Immediately after the crash, Wells was treated at Stroger Hospital but refused doctors' advice and asked to be released, in part because he didn't have health insurance. He limped out of the hospital, was handcuffed and escorted by police to a waiting police wagon and was transferred to St. Bernard Hospital. Wells was issued a traffic citation for negligent driving but had not been charged criminally. He had a spotless driving record with no convictions for moving violations in any state during the last 10 years, according to Michigan records. [email protected] Copyright © 2008, Chicago Tribune
