We had a Sherriff here in North Carolina who made the news by doing something similar.. he painted the jail cells pink, but he put the prisoners in Depression-era styled pinstripe uniforms, and put his deputies in paramilitary garb. He also gained a bit of notoriety for his "spider" car (police interceptor with a rather interesting paint job), which was eventually auctioned off by the county and purchased by a supporter of his.. I don't recall the whole story, but I think he was ousted from office because something wasn't right with the way he financed his campaign, or something of the sort.
Anyhow, I say kudos to the Sheriff. If life behind bars is a little uncomfortable, then that's how it's supposed to be. I wouldn't endorse his actions is he were starving his inmates, torturing them, or anything of that sort, but what he's doing seems reasonable. If you don't like it, then the solution is quite simple - don't fuck off and get yourself thrown in jail. |
