Hitchhiking... Yay or Nay?

So I've never done it before but I've always wanted to try. I've got a lot of places I want to see, but no car or ton of cash with which to do so. In the same way that I've really gotten into couchsurfing (dot com) as a way to give shelter that I have to travelers who don't, I wonder if there's a way to organize a larger rideshare board bigger than the typical craigslist/local type by working with professional folks like yourselves.
I've had friends get dropped off at a truckstop outside of town to ask until they catch a ride in the right direction, and plenty of stories to tell. Surely you've got your own? Educate me. I want to know about your personal feelings/criticisms of hitchhiking and those that do so that you've met, as well as the larger picture. What are company policies about picking up riders? What is the trucker culture perception of the act? What do you gain/lose from it and what do you expect in return? Thanks! Bea

They arrested some trucker in Illinois or Indiana about a week ago. Last bit of the story I heard was that officials estimated that DNA testing would lead to at least 10 seperate individuals whose blood was smeared all over the inside of his cab.
Yeah, hitchhiking is a great thing.  This ain't the 70's. Why anyone in their right mind would try hitching in this century is beyond me. Everytime you try to get a travelling "story", you are risking your life with who knows what kind of monster. And yes, companies...ALL companies...have strict policies against hitchhikers.

I've never considered hitchin rides a thing to do...of course....I scared my mother when I was born....so I didn't really think it would work for me. {sigh}

I have a better idea, get a job as a truck driver and get paid to see the country from your own bed on wheels. It beats hitchiking for sure. I would prefer to walk accross the country than climb into a vehicle with a crazy person.

 And for the OP: I hitched around quite a bit in the 70's and into the early 80's but wouldn't even consider it these days. |
