I have recently been moved into dispatch, and I guess to fit my new perceived role, I should probably go out and buy a set of horns or something.
It's funny how some of the drivers attitude change toward you, even when there is no reason for it at all. I'm the same guy I've always been, but a few of the guys have changed their demeanor around me, and I find that somewhat stereotypical, but strange at the same time. Go figure.

You say your the same guy now, but what about when the company head or dispatch head is breathing down your neck about why trucks aren't moving on your watch? Is it because your being the same guy, the nice guy in dispatch? If that be the case, the nice guy will have to go in the companies eyes, will you still be the nice guy and end up losing your job or will you toss the nice guy act to the curb in order to keep your job? Hopefully it never comes to that for you but that is how it will go for a "nice guy" dispatcher. Too nice and the company is up your rear about it. Too mean and the drivers hate you, try to find the right balance.

" I am the same guy I have always been". It is too late. The lying has already started. We may never get you back on our side now.

On the target dedicated fleet at gti a driver had a non preventable accident that took him off the road for 6months and he was put into dispatching the target fleet. It was so nice to have a dispatcher that actually knew what was going on out here. He had driven for gti for over 25years before. He was my favorite dispatcher/boss ever.
Hopefully you can be that guy to your drivers...

Congrats TCT  ... now maybe you can help the other dispatchers understand the life on the road a bit .... as well as enlighten a few drivers that everyone has a job to do ... doesn't matter if your setting behind a desk or the wheel .... without both .... items wouldn't be rollin down the hwy and life would come to a halt ........... Lets face it ~ there's those who can only drive a truck and there's the ones that can only set behind a desk - - - But if a driver is lucky enough to get a dispatcher that CAN DO BOTH and has spent time on the road .... it can be better for everyone involved.
