Hey there, This is a video I made a while back about the OTR trucking industry and recently uploaded to youtube. I hope you'll take a look at it when you have time.
Here's what a few truck drivers have said about it: "great video!!! it's the truth...from a long line of family trucking"protrukr2000 "I am beyond words, this is an excellant video commentary 5 stars minimum good work Rexgrove, thank you" truckertwotimes "every bit is true" morpheq *heres what Wayne from over at Life on the Road.com said about it: "Want to know what trucking is all about? The author mentions this was done a few years ago for a class project, not much has changed. This video is really well done and guides the viewer from the history of trucking regulations to the present day problems with good how and why explanations. And compares truckers to some other workers. It’s 18 minutes, but worth the time. By a college student / trucker." I don't know how to embed video, so heres the url to part one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orHEav4qReI url to part two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on4UG3CBWSg Thanks again, Rex

Great video Rexgrove...the commentary was very well done.
You make a good point about deregulation and the passing of risk from large companies down and onto the shoulders of those who decide to lease on to them. From the corporate standpoint it is a win win situation where they get the load carrying capacity with none of the unknown risks (such as breakdowns accident repair etc) and those risks are now carried by each O/O. I truly wonder if these O/Os that sign to these large carriers for $.80-.90 per mile understand the risks being passed onto them from these companies...you 'd think if they did then they would not sign on at those rates and the system would have to recalibrate at a higher rate to get these drivers back. But...strangely enough, we don't see this happening. |
