I actually spent all day putting in Green Asphalt. I do all kinds of different colors in decorative asphalt. It is amazing what you can do if the customer has unlimited money

 

I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but your avatar must have bent down a bit too close to the green asphalt... it's hair took on the color...



But seriously, how did it look? Is there any chance you could post a picture?

 

Some of the roads on the Hawaiian Islands have a reddish lava color. I guess because the red volcanic dirt gets mixed in somehow.

 

I did not take a picture Friday but I should be back out on Monday and will snap a picture. And I only wish I still had hair on my head, green or otherwise! :lol:

 

Now it is time for our annual asphalt lecture.

Asphalt (Bituminous concrete) is composed of the following:

1. Liquid Asphalt
2. Aggregate (any size of stone)
3. Sand (this will have an effect on the color of the asphalt)
4. Stone Dust (this too will have a significant effect on the color)

Now there are far too many variations of asphalt to discuss here however if you adjust the levels of any of the above components you get a different product. Be that a "Base Course" or a "Surface Course" and some mixed omit any or all of the ingredients from above such as "Sand Mix" and all have a very specific place.

Most mixes will not have a coloring agent in them as it is rather expensive to add. Most asphalt plants do not care about the color of the Product only the quality. Color is typically not a special concern. Regular asphalt is around $50 a ton, the colored stuff is around $90 a ton.

Oh, that's really interesting. I wondered about the cost.

Do you have any idea if the cost is related to the actual cost of the materials, or whether it's related to the ability of those who want it it to pay more????

(it would be so great it we could save the heat from our highways. I wish that rather than giving tax breaks to the oil and gas industry when they are making record profits, we would take that money and use it to develope some low cost heat alternatives for people, ordinary people.)

 

Dang I should have remembered that. We have put down some colored asphalt but it's been atleast 2 years.

Our surface course consit of liquid asphalt (I can't think of them but there are a few differnt grades of liquid asphalt) , 78M rocks, sand, screenings (stone dust), and rap (old asphalt).

One of the contracters around here got ahold of some pink rocks and and you could always tell what roads they had paved.

We charge $58 a ton plus tax.

 

The actual cost of asphalt can vary depending on many variables. I will give a simple example.

Plant A: 1 mile from the quarry. Haul rate for the aggregate= $.75 ton

Plant B: 50 Miles from the quarry. Haul rate for the aggregate= $10 ton

Now both plants product is priced very similar but plant A has significantly reduced costs. I know for a fact the profit margin for plant B is approximately $10 a ton.
