The only reason you won't see a remake of Smokey, and the Bandit is, the car...
Look what they build for cars now, no more big muscle cars... That movie inspired me to get my 80' Camero... I went looking for a Trans-Am back then but, all the ones I had looked at had been beaten on, so far as the engines were concerned... You look at what GM produces now for so called "sports" cars, and you just want to laugh, and cry at the same time...   If they did a remake, they could change bandits role a bit, and make him a man who restores old classic cars. Then takes out one of his best restorations for a long haul trip, as the plan was in the original... But, alas, the original movie really was/is, the best... Just for chuckles as far as actors to play the roles... The Bandit, Tom Cruise, or George Clooney... Snow Man, Brad Pitt Sally Fields role, Jodie Foster, or, Drew Barrymore Bufford T. Justice, James Belushi Justice's Son, Will Ferrell, or Jason Lee (from TV show My Name is Earl)... It's like other movies back then, Jaws, Animal House, you just can't mess with perfection... There is one movie I can't find anymore, that I wanted to get on DVD, don't know if any of you ever saw it, or remember it... The movie ORCA, about the killer whale, and Richard Harris was in it... It's not in print from what I've been able to find in the DVD stores... Well, anyway, ah.... The good old days of John Wayne movies, the 3 Stooges, Clint Eastwood westerns, and Smokey, and the Bandit... It would be nice if they could come up with a real good western again... I think the last one I saw was Unforgiven, but, it was a little tense that picture... Or, dances with wolves, but, that was more military, then your average cowboy western film... Always liked the Charles Bronson films too... He knew how to kick butt, and take names, that's for sure...

Smokey will be re-done soon. All the old movies are being re-done anymore, very few original movies these days. Black Dog was along the lines of Smokey. Instead of illegal beer it was illegal guns. Instead of Buford chasing, it was the "shipper," Meat Loaf.
Fozzy, those rice burners need the NOS to beat a real car. My brother's Mustang would wipe the floor with the rice burners motor to motor. Rice on NOS, still could not beat him and he was giving them a head start. He was only on a V6.......musta been that little button he had hidden in the car that gave him the mysterious extra 2 cylinders. A real car can drop in a those huge blocks that can push out more than 500 HP and do 160 mph with another gear still to go. A 4 banger in a Rice with NOS might get up to 120-125. Buddy has an old Monte Carlo with 353 or 358 in it. Halfway down an 1/8 mile track, he was letting off to keep the car under 100 mph. If it went over 100 he would have to put in a roll cage before they would allow him back. Car came from North Carolina and the block was welded in place to the frame.

I was at a Walmart, came out from doing some shopping, as I was walking back to my truck, there sat (away from all the Walmart traffic) near my truck, a Bandit Trans-Am. Perfect shape couldnt tell if it was restored or not, looked mostly original. (Not an original movie Trans-Am), but exact in every detail. I should have snapped a picture, but I wasnt thinking. Only one think really stuck about it, as I was walking around admiring it I happen to look at the license plate. It was registered as an antique. I remember seeing Smokey and the Bandit in the theater(B4) the magor megaplex's, when it first came out. Maybe some of you youngins' dont know it but there was a day when a movie theater only played one movie. I was about 17yrs old when I saw Smokey.
There aint nooooo waaaaay a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am should be registered as an antique....Getting older sure does stink...somtimes.

You know what is really sad, is that I bought a "Rice Burner" 4x4 Pick up Truck, to replace my Camero...
I've had the 4x4 for 18 yrs., and it's still going... If I had kept the Camero, it's worth now would only be in it's age... I could see the writing on the wall back then in so far as gasoline prices, and so, I bought a Truck with a V6, for fuel economy... It doesn't have pick up, and speed my Camero had, and let me tell you, I missed being able to just lightly touch that gas pedal, and have that car take off like a shot... It didn't even have a big V8 engine in it... The sad thing is that when I chose my pick up, it was between the fuel economical truck I did buy, or Choosing to get a Chevy Step Side, with a big V8 engine, and oversized tires with an off road package... I really liked that Chevy, with the bucket seats, console, and standard shift. I really wanted to buy the Chevy. But, my common sense told me, that I had to be practical, and know that buying the "Rice Burner", was going to be more beneficial in the long run... Gasoline is now over $3.00 a gallon. I have a 19 gallon gas tank, calculate that out, it's $57.00 to fill my tank... Nevermind what it would have cost me, if I'd gotten that powerful Chevy Step Side... I do miss the muscle cars, and I really miss low cost gasoline... I even miss the smell of leaded gasoline... Unfortunately everyone of my friends who bought a Chevy pick up back when I bought my "Rice Burner", owned their trucks for maybe 5 years, then sold them, to buy something else... The front ends always went out of alignment on the Chevy Pick ups, sending you to the garage for alignments often, and eating up your tires on a regular basis... Other than the original tires that came with my pick up, I've only bought an additional 2 sets of tires, and the trucks got over 260,000 miles on it... In fact I just had a neighbor who owned an old Chevy Blazer, just trade it in for a Toyota Yaris... I hated giving up having the power of a V8 engine, and I wasn't about to go cold turkey down to a 4 cylinder pick up truck. So, I compromised and got the V6... I haven't had to do any serious work on that truck since I bought it new... It gets regular oil changes, the exhaust done every few years, and for the most part that's it... Now, the only issues coming up, are the parts that are getting old, and rust... This truck would probably go forever if not for New England winters, and all the road salt that destroys every vehicle in this part of the country... I paid $16,400.00 for my truck fully loaded, all the options but, one... The same truck is over $30,000.00 today... I've owned my truck at a value of $911.11 per year for 18 years, if you calculate out it's cost against the years I've owned it... You can't beat that, and you can't find a car, or truck that would give you that kind of value these days, except another rice burner pick up of the same brand... You may pay a little more for a rice burner, but, I have to admit you certainly do get your monies worth out of them... Again, another sad point... I grew up a Chevy owner, or basically a GM owner, my whole family bought GM products... Until I worked in the garage, and saw what the head mechanic was driving... If you ever want to know what quality vehicles are out there to buy, just go see what any top notch auto mechanic is driving... I'll tell you why... They work on cars, and trucks all week, the last thing they want to do is, work on their own vehicles... The top mechanic in the shop I worked, owned a 4 cylinder Toyota 4x4 pick up, with that famous 22R engine... His wife drove a BMW car... If you've got the money, and are buying new, you just can't beat the long term quality of some of the rice burners... While they are also a little more expensive in part costs, you are getting what your paying for, and that is long term, quality performance... It is rare to see a rice burner pick up broken down on the side of the road... Most of the time, it's a Ford, or other domestic pick up busted down on the side of the road. I used to tell my friends that I'll buy a Chevy again, the day they make them as high quality as the rice burner I ended up buying... When I was younger I wanted to be a stock car driver, went to the races on weekends in the summer, and like many people, always looked forward to the crashes... Otherwise, the races really were boring, unless there was a close match up near the finish line... Some people say the good old days were not as good as life is today. But, I would have to say that life was a whole lot more fun back when gas was cheap, the cars had "muscle", you could go to a Drive In movie, and have plenty of room to spread out in your car. Now, the Drive In's are gone, cars are small, you get leg cramps in traffic, and todays cars have to be loaded with air bags, so you don't get killed in a minor fender bender... If I'd had some place I could have stored that Chevy Camero, I would have kept it... It would have been worth enough today to pay for a new rice burner truck...  But, I sold it as is, for $1,200.00 to a kid looking for his first car, back in 89'... Oh well, can't have everything, where would you put it...
