IMO, yoopr nailed it. A good heavy dose of vinegar will do wonders or you can subsitute that with a "good" citrus cleaner, but vinegar works better. Double up on the detergent and use fabric softener also. You may have to wash them a couple of times, but it will get most if not all of the smell out.
If it's a stain spot, diesel, oil or similar, spray the spot thoroughly with WD-40 and then rub in hand cleaner just before you put it in the wash. A couple of squirts of liquid hand cleaner in the wash also is better than any spray and wash on the market. The WD-40 helps to loosen up the stain, as JR said "Boy, oil and water don't mix", and the hand cleaner will wash it away.
Growing up on a farm I saw my mom us this remedy a million times and it worked like a charm. Have done it a million times myself and it still works.
