The Term Cracker, if I remember right, goes back to pre-Civil War days and had to do with cracking a whip over the horse or Donkey.
Somebody will set me straight on this I'm sure

Not to "set you straight", Yooper, because I do not know this for a fact, but my understanding of the term "Cracker" is that it is a derogatory term used to refer to white people, and is used in reference to a white overseer using a whip on a negro slave.

No racial flames here, please!!

According to Wikipedia, Cracker is also used as a term for persons living in Georgia or Florida, poor white trash, another term for rednecks, and a host of other usages. It's also used as a racial term for white people.
