What is a DAC report?
A DAC (Drive A Check) report is a report card for CDL drivers. DAC reports are managed by HireRight, a private worldwide company that began in 1981 as DAC services. Currently, more than 2,500 trucking companies use HireRight’s services in the process of hiring commercial drivers. Any company can request a DAC report for a fee, which will place a CDL driver in HireRight’s database.
Why was DAC started?
DAC was created in response to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulation Part 391 which requires employers to obtain a commercial driver’s safety and performance history as part of the hiring process.
What type of information is on a DAC report?
A DAC report will list motor vehicle records for every state in which a CDL driver has ever held a license. The records are derived from several government sources, such as the CDLIS (Commercial Driver’s License Information System), a nationwide database maintained by state licensing agencies.
The CDLIS will list license class and type, endorsements, restrictions, driving violations, suspensions and DUIs if any.
Another source is the driver’s pre-employment screening program (PSP) record available from the FMCSA. The PSP includes five years of accident history, and three years of roadside inspection data from the FMCSA Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) database.
You can see a sample PSP report below.
In addition, a DAC report can include:
- 3 Year Employment History if a driver drove a commercial vehicle not subject to FMCSA regulations
- 10 Year Employment History if the driver drove a commercial vehicle subject to FMCSA regulations
- 3 Year Employment and Drug/Alcohol Violation History
- County Criminal, Felony, and Misdemeanor Records for each county lived in
- DOT Pre-Employment Drug Testing
- DOT Alcohol Testing
- DOT Physical Exam
- S. Employment Eligibility Verification I-9 Status
- Other information: Types of equipment operated, loads hauled, reasons for leaving former employers, rehire eligibility, and truck driving school performance records.

How does this information affect the driver?
An employer will use the info on your DAC report to decide if you driver meets their hiring requirements. Each company may have different sets of requirements.
Here are some examples of what trucking companies look for on your DAC report:
- How much driving experience.
- What equipment the driver has operated (doubles, tankers, or forklifts)
- How many times the driver has switched companies
- Any record of abandoned company vehicles
- Does the driver have experience hauling hazardous materials?
A drivers DAC report could have information reported that could be an employment game changer. Your report can lose you a job or open doors to higher paying, more secure jobs.
HireRight does not verify whether the information a company reports on a DAC is true. Therefore, it is a must that all commercial drivers know what’s in their DAC report. The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act requires HireRight to provide you with this information.
Any CDL driver can dispute incorrect information found on their DAC report for free. The dispute investigation process may take up to 30 days, depending on the nature, scope and source of the information being disputed.
HireRight has trained representatives who will work with you if you need assistance identifying the specific records that you want to dispute. You may file an online dispute by clicking the link HERE.
