Hey Flyer. Now you're beginning to date yourself. An Omni? :?: I thought that I would probably be the only one to ever admit driving one of those ugly cracker boxes! I'm glad that you are still here to tell us about it  :D |

Oh damn...brain fart. It was an Escort.
The Omni was further back than that. :) |

I just moved to Iowa and can finally breathe a sigh of relief, compared to MT, ID and Eastern WA; deer are scarce around these parts.
There are roads in MT that I won’t drive at night (212 from Crow Agency to Belle Fourche SD, Hwy 93, Hwy…ah heck they’re all pretty bad at night) Like others have said before me, slow down, grip the wheel and hit the bugger. I try to avoid driving at night if at all possible, I’ve had close calls even in the daytime, and some deer will stand on the shoulder and not even look at me as I pass just 20 feet away.
I once saw a car with a smashed in grill that still had fur stuck to it, and 2 of those deer whistles still attached. |

Say what?!?
I've lived in Iowa a good portion of my life. I regularly see herds of deer numbering over 100, picking corn out of cut fields and not a day goes by where I don't see them off the interstate or highway. Heck, I live in the middle of a rather large city/town, no timber around, and they come through my yard all the time. Whacked one in the ass with a slingshot last year, while he was eating my hostas. Even had one peeking in the window of my daughter's bedroom last fall! Prevert! |

A closer inspection probably would have revealed that the deer was from the dry van/reefer species. This particular species is well known for this (and other) types of aberrant behavior. The tanker species is not known to behave in this manner. 8) |

Haha...that was pretty good...
Although, if you put the offending deer in a reefer turned down really low for awhile...would do wonders to improve his behavior.....

| The deer are pretty bad in Michigan too. My girlfriend hit one in my car a couple weeks ago, tore up the right front, the hood, and now the right turn signal indicator stays on inside on the dash all the time. The damage really saddened me but it could have been a lot worse and at least nobody but the deer got hurt. |

The indicator staying on all the time is a symptom of either a burned/blown bulb or a direct ground fault (short). Look at the wiring and bulbs in the area where the damage is for either or both of the two! |

You are here and Bambi isn't . . everything worked out perfectly.
I hit my first deer after cresting Lolo Pass, MT. He stuck his head out just far enough to punch my right headlight backwards through it's housing . . with his antlers. It was dark and I stopped to make sure he wasn't in the road but couldn't find him. As far as I know, he made it home in time for Letterman.
My next encounter was in northern Idaho on the especially narrow and twisty US 95. A gang of them were crossing west to east when my truck forced them to quickly detour north, or else. I slowed down just enough and they sped up just enough so that I barely bumped one of them in the rear end before they made their getaway.
Remember this: If you swerve and crash or roll, it is extremely unlikely the deer will hang around to give a statement. It's best to hit them and preserve the evidence. |

I knew you all wouldn't let me down!! 8)
I wasn't even near home (deer central)! I was in northern Nebraska, where deer act like they think they're cows! Herds of the things were out--HERDS, I tell you!
Thanks for taking the sting out of this. I'm no longer shaking, and it feels good to know I'm not alone...and that it may not even be the last time I do it (now there's a comforting thought! )
CAD rocks!

Yep, just go get yourself a little deer-shaped stencil and a can of spray paint and start "tallying" the hits. :) |

Two months later he hit a FAMILY of them.
Three weeks later he hit another one.
All in a brand spankin new pete 387.
At that point whenever dispatch mentioned the words "pennsylvania" or "virginia" he used two words that started with F and Off.
The family didn't happen to be in VA on Rt. 17 south somewhere outside of Tappahannock, Va a little over a year ago?? I came thru that area and at least 3 were dead and scattered all over the place like a massacre. I couldn't avoid it all and straddled the center of the road to minimize the guts on the trailer as best I could.
I have hit a gallon paint can of yellow paint that was rolling across the road. Didn't mix well with my red body. No animals yet in my truck but I have hit plenty of wildlife in my car. |
