This is an off-the-wall thread, but I saw something interesting on "Outside The Lines" on ESPN.

I've never heard of Art Schlichter, but he was a QB at Ohio State, and was drafted by Colts (Indy). Apparently, he was a big time gambler. In, and out of prison for many years. The way they talked, he got out of prison last year for the last time, as to what he said. He goes around the country, and speaks about gambling, and stuff. He has a non-profit organization to help folks that are having trouble gambling, etc. The narriator said that he got as much as $800 in donations to his organization, at one of his speakings. ESPN interviewed another guy who knows Schlichter. He said, "No one should give that man any money. If people want to donate, they should donate to all the people that Art Schlichter has robbed from over the years."

It was quite a story. Anyone else know about this guy?

Oh yeah, Art Schlister (sp?). He is the worst of the worst when it comes to gambling addicts. I had a buddy that lived on the same street as him before he did his last stint.

A few years ago, while in jail his attorney sneaked a cell phone into jail so he could make calls to his bookie!! Unbelievable. His attorney was disbarred.

And yoopr, I have to disagree with you that gambling addiction and alcohol addictions are illnesses. It is a choice in both respects. Once you tell these people that they are "sick" and have a "disease" it takes away all personal responsibility for their behavior. They think that "relapse" is okay because it is a "disease" that they have no power over.

Besides, Art was a pathetic QB anyway. He was with the Colts when they were at their worst. He was a backup to Mike Pagel when they first moved to Indy.

It's been proven that there's a Gene that some people have that make some people susceptible to alcoholism and it is hereditary

You are incorrect. It is a theory, not a proven fact.

I remember when it happened. He basically threw away an NFL career with the gambling problem.
