I side with Twilight Flyer and CAD on this.
I brought up the question, and it WAS immediately pointed out this was removed for a reason.
Semantics over the details of that is not really productive. The chain of command was enacting protocols.
It simply is not wise to interfere where not invited, nor commissioned.
Whether semantics are productive or not is irrelevant. I've been wrongfully accused of doing something underhanded here, and since CAD has chosen to advertise the "behind the scenes" stuff, I feel that I need to defend myself here, instead of via PM.
I simply posted a link for those who wished to view the memberlist, as it wasn't (at the time) "deleted" or "now gone" as CAD stated - the link was simply removed from the header. I never questioned why the link was removed from the page headers, and fully understood the reasoning behind it (although I disagree that it helps to cut down on spam, as the spammers are unable to PM any of the members here anyway since the 50 post rule was enacted, and as evidenced by this thread, there are probably only about 3 people who actually look at the memberlist).
I totally disagree with CAD that I was trying to circumvent their moderation process. Whoever edited my post screwed it up, plain and simple. They left the web address for the memberlist intact, and simply deleted one half of the [url] bbcode, so that it was unclickable. I assumed that I screwed up my bbcode when I first entered it, and simply fixed it. Nothing childish, selfish, or irresponsible about it. If it was so bad, then why was the response which also included the link left intact, and if it was so bad, then why did I receive no PM requesting that I delete it (or at the very least giving me a heads up that it was deleted)? The only PM I have received is the one that CAD was nice enough to post in this thread, threatening to delete my account, and accusing me of things that are simply untrue.
Had any one of the moderators stated in this thread that they didn't want anyone to link to the memberlist page, then I wouldn't have done so. I'm not psychic, and I didn't violate any of the rules set forth by the owners of the website.
If anything, they should be thanking me for showing that anyone who has even the smallest bit of knowledge of standard phpBB websites could still find their memberlist, as the "memberlist.php" is pretty much standard throughout all phpBB websites for the memberlist page. Since this all went down this morning, the entire page had been replaced with this (and rightfully so):
Quote: The memberlist has been disabled to keep all the spammers from posting links to porn or any other site.
So, to CAD:
You're welcome
I guess that's what I get for trying to give a helping hand to a known member who was simply looking for the memberlist link. |

After perusing this thread a few times, I can only guess that we've got a bit of a misunderstanding happening in here. When I saw the thread this morning, the memberlist was URL-linked and went right to the memberlist (that has since been remedied, so is no longer an issue). I simply deleted the post and the ensuing posts after it and posted my message regarding it and locked the thread. I cannot address whether it was originally edited/changed last night or anything, as I have no knowledge whether that is the case.
The bottom line is that the memberlist link was removed to eliminate the last vestiges of spammer attraction. Most spammers would simply create a login ID with their website in their profile, which attracts clicks from board users who are scanning the memberlist for just that reason. Most of the time, a spammer would not even post, relying on that link to get their hits.
Having moved login creation to a manual approval system and now having removed the memberlist, spammers are a thing of the past. Sure, one or two might get by through creating what appears to be a legit user name, but with no way to list their website, they end up banned and gone before they can get anywhere. So this site has effectively become worthless to them...as it should be.
Regarding the warning that Jeff posted on this thread, it was a warning to pretty much everyone. Personally, I think it's allright to bait the mods now and then...we're all pretty laid back and we can take some joshing and ribbing. :P But the lesson to be taken from this is just don't go out and do something that even appears to be circumventing a preventive procedure put in place by the board owner. It's the perception that it creates and one that you don't want hanging over your head.
Remember, the board is owned by Jeff and Lucinda...we all just exist in this little e-world. All in all, they are pretty hands-off owners, relying on a few mods and a whole lot of good and mature posters to make this a great board. I know Jeff and Lucinda; I've met them both and chat with them often; they are fantastic people. But they are also business people, through and through. Any and all decisions they make regarding this board and website are based on creating and maintaining a successful business. And it's something they are pretty good at. As a matter of fact, we mods have all been promised rather large baronies when they take over first Kentucky and then the country.

Well, someone edited it (or attempted to), and I assumed that is what he was referring to. When I did so, it was just because I was trying to be helpful to the person (or people) who were looking for it.
The fact that it was deleted is not my issue - if the powers that be didn't want it there, that was fine. My issue was with the accusation that I was attempting to undermine, or in some way "one-up" the owners of the website. If I had done something that was deliberate, and was attempting to circumvent blocks put in place, then I wouldn't be complaining. But my intentions were innocent, and yet I was still wrongfully accused, and the tone taken by him in accusing me was uncalled for. This could have been handled much more quietly and tastefully.
This is not unlike the issues with certain posters who were being "called out" in recent weeks. There is a PM system in place, and I just don't see why this stuff needs to be aired out in the open.
But whatever. I'd still love to know who edited my post (or attempted to), since that was where this all started. If it was that bad, then it should have been deleted in the first place, as well as any post that quoted it, which has since happened. |

Which was the perception that I was alluding to. :? What's done is done and out in the open; no cat in the bag or anything like that. I don't believe there was actually any blatant attempt to "one-up" the owner, but I can also see where the perception might be viewed differently.

Just for that, Hogster, you are not invited to any of my Barony Bashes. Bawdy wenches and kegs of ale and purloined French wines (only the best).
No soup for you! |

If you truly have Baron potential...then you will have no trouble with this bit of trivia.
Who is this a photo of?
No cheating. |
