Truck drivers have to endure some unique challenges in their work. Hours of Service regulations dictate the exact schedule of when drivers can be on the road. Stretches of time on the road while sleeping in the cab puts drivers through long periods of isolation. Meanwhile, eating at truck stops can make it easy for truckers to put on weight or live an unhealthy lifestyle.

It’s all too easy to tunnel vision on the challenges, though. The truth is that truck driving is a great job.

Getting a CDL license to drive regional or over-the-road is one of the only paths left in America to a well-paying blue collar job. A job that doesn’t require a four-year degree or sit in a bland office from 9-to-5.

The news station WMDT in the Northeast recently highlighted an inspiring story about truck driver Ronnie Savage.

Ronnie Savage was fortunate enough to get a grant to go to Wor-Wic community college to get his CDL license. For twenty years, Wor-Wic has been running its CDL program, which gets drivers their license after only 8 weeks. Drivers can then be immediately be placed with partners like Savage’s current employer – Cato Gas & Oil.

Savage says, “Trucking actually saved me. It actually saved my life,”

For many Americans trying to pay bills and start a career, that’s what trucking is – a lifeline. So yes, truck drivers do have unique challenges as part of their job. But trucking is also an incredible career full of opportunity.
