Are Mandatory Snow Chains On The Way?

By: ClassADrivers.com

Now that autumn is finally here, truck drivers are enjoying some cooler weather. But we should look ahead to the looming fact that winter is coming. Because winter brings snow and dangerous patches of ice.

Fortunately, in the winter, truckers are able to equip their rig with snow chains for improved safety. But are these mandatory? And are more regulations on the way?

What Are Snow Chains?

Tire chains, also known as snow chains, are designed to tightly hug your tires. These chains come in various sizes to fit different tire diameters. When the correct size is equipped to your semi-truck tires, snow chains will increase your traction and your level of control when driving over snow or ice.

Improving traction reduces the likelihood of a semi losing all stopping power, but the tradeoff for this type of safety is a reduction in fuel efficiency and speed. Of course, a few dollars saved on speed isn’t worth your life.

States that Require Truckers to Use Tire Chains

Although no federal law exists in regards tothe use of snow chains on semi-trucks, there are several in place for each state. Here are the areas with mandatory tire chain requirements.

  • California: If R3 or RequirementThree signs are posted, all vehicles are required to have snow chains equipped
  • Colorado: If Level 2 weather is reached (i.e. snow is covering pavement for extended periods) tire chains are required. Additional fines will be charged if this is ignored and a vehicle gets stuck as a result
  • Nevada: Signs may be posted requiring use of tire chains.
  • North Dakota: If semi-truck goes over 25 mph during snowy weather, tire chains are required.
  • Oregon: Defer to signs.
  • Utah: Defer to signs.
  • Vermont: Defer to signs.
  • Washington: Tire chains must be used during inclement weather, and two extra sets of chains must be on board from November 1st to April 1st.
  • Wyoming: When conditions are too dangerous, travel may be restricted to vehicles with chains.

Fined for Lack of Snow Chains On Board or Equipped

We’re all hoping last year’s polar vortex was an isolated event. In case it isn’t, we should all be prepared to endure the harsh weather once more. A great way to do so is by getting a few sets of snow chains.

Snow chains have been in the news again recently, as a new rule in Canada will require truck drivers to use these chains on highways during the winter months.

Will more US politicians follow their lead and increase regulations? Could a federal law be implemented? We’ll keep you updated.
