The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) recently announced more than $118 million in competitive grant funding to go towards the trucking industry. The stated goals of the new programs are to improve the integrity and safety of the country’s commercial trucking industry, to strengthen the enforcement of safety regulations, and to increase the number of opportunities for military veterans to pursue careers in trucking.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will distribute the money among three major initiatives. The majority, $71.6 million in High Priority grants, will assist state and local efforts to lower the number of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) accidents. Efforts will use new data-driven enforcement, public awareness campaigns, the implementation of new compliance technology, and new programs for HAZMAT.
Commercial Driver’s License laws have been in the news lately, and the new Commercial Driver’s License Program Implementation (CDLPI) awards totaling an additional $43.8 million will assist states in bolstering the CDL process. The grants are designed to strengthen state adherence to federal law and prevent fraud. Hopefully this will ensure that only eligible drivers are granted licenses and kept in the CDL system.
Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training (CMVOST) awards totaling $3.4 million are a modest but important investment in our veterans. These funds should help veterans get high-quality, safety-focused CDL training for future careers as truck drivers. Programs will assist current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including reservists and members of the National Guard, as well as their families, as they transition into trucking employment.
The investments, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, are focused on “keeping unqualified, unvetted drivers off the road,” implementing technology to increase safety, and assisting veterans who are starting their careers. According to federal officials, this unified funding strategy will strengthen the nation’s commercial vehicle workforce, increase compliance, and improve roadway safety.
