The new “Pro-Trucker Package,” a policy initiative from the FMCSA, is designed to boost the trucking industry by helping truck drivers nationwide. Many truck drivers are still asking questions about this policy, unveiled in June.

The primary objectives are reducing needless rules, enhancing working conditions, and providing drivers with additional resources. Let’s break it down:

Additional Parking

New federal financing for safe truck parking with a grant of more than $275 million. This directly addresses one of truck drivers’ greatest pain points. $180 million will be given to Florida alone to build 917 parking spots along major thoroughfares.

Reversing the Speed Limiter Regulations

A plan that would have required large trucks to install electronic speed limiters was withdrawn by the administration. This will help companies and owner-operators save costs, and possibly save their business, by not requiring them to comply with new technology demands.

Officials also argue that doing this will avoid the safety hazards that arise from trucks moving more slowly than traffic, which could be forced by speed limiter technology.

Improved Digital Tools and Resources

The Pro-Trucker Package includes improvements to the DataQ and FMCSA-complaint systems to make it easier for drivers to obtain information and report issues.

Cutting Red Tape

The Package includes removal of outdated language and rewriting of regulations. This also includes new initiatives to combat illicit double-brokering and freight fraud.

Hours-of-Service Adjustments

A new pilot program will allow drivers to split their rest periods into 6/4 or 5/5 hours. Also, drivers can pause their 14-hour work clock for 30 minutes to 3 hours.

Rules for CDL Security and Language

A national audit of state CDL practices for non-domiciled commercial drivers. These drivers are filling jobs that could be filled by American drivers. English proficiency requirements will be strictly enforced to guarantee that drivers can comprehend traffic signs and communicate in an emergency.

Pro-Trucker Package Summary

The goal of the “Pro-Trucker Package” is to make trucking safer and more fair for American workers. Hopefully this policy will allow drivers more control over their work by addressing common problems like parking, rules, and break periods.
