Default Coleman 40 quart coolers

This thing should be recalled immediately! :x I had a plug melt; so I called Coleman. To their credit they had UPS pick it up and sent me another unit. You HAVE to unplug it everyday after only a couple of hours use. I did so until I went to sleep and forgot to unplug the damn thing. The plug melted and I was lucky it didn't cause a fire.
I don't recommend anyone buying this product.

My last cooler was a Coleman 40 quart that ran almost 24/7 for 6 months. Never had this problem.

I have a coleman for a year and a half. Never unplug it, works fine. I had to take it appart a few weeks ago and clean the dust off the coils because it wasn't cooling as well as it should. Works ok now.

Better check out that lighter outlet! I bet it is your problem - not the cooler. Truth is lighter outlets are about the crappiest connector system going. I'm gonna cut all them plugs off and use two prong bullet connectors (like the 4 prong small trailer connectors). I'm sick of these !@#$ things smoking, melting, and getting loose. You can find these connectors at an auto parts store or online at Copper Electronics and other sites (They have several with different wire sizes - TP-2, TP-10-2, TP-8 ). 8)

I would be the problem is with the wiring of the plug in the truck. My cooler runs 24/7. This is the 3rd one I have purchased - updated fan. One of the others is in my horse trailer for those trips and gave a friend the other one as a present a couple of years ago. Has never had an issue with it.

Default coleman cooler

the reason why your plug melted is the plug is loose or dirty

this causes it to arc

that creates heat and melts the plug

both igloos and colemans will do it

i solved the problem in my rig

by getting a heavy duty extention car cord

i duck taped the extention plug to the truck plug

to stop any slippage

i have the cooler power plug hanging next to my cooler and can easily disconnect it from the extention cord during hometime

i have not had a melted cord since doing this

columbia's are worse then centurys for this problem

your cooler plug will also get hotter when your batteries are low

do to the motor working harder due to lower available amps

take a 1/2 horse power drill and put it on a 20 foot 18 guage extention cord

that cord will heat up quick for the same reason

columbias are worse because they are a lighter rig

and bounce more

the bouncing causes the plug to come loose

arc and melt

You don't get it, There both the same truck, just diffrent fiberglass on the out side. All freightliners shake and vibrate, its a truck, there aint no diff. in how a Columbia or century drives.
