Who do you work for and why

This goes for both LTL and OTR.
State you live in
Company you work for
Why you picked them, and if your "satisfied" with that company
How often do you load or unload

Mackman 03-04-2007 10:56 AM

Pennsylvania
Aqua Wastewater Management Inc.
Home every night make 18.74 an hr. Hauling shit in a 6,000gal tank. Truck is kinda a piece of shit. Work around 50 hrs a week more if you want it. I am leaving cuz they are messing with are benefits. They want to take away OT after 8hrs and make it over 40 hrs worked  they stop giving us work boot money. Every year they gave us something last year it was 90 bucks for work boots. This year nothing. Really really good benefits as far as medical and dental vision rx etc. Up to 5 weeks pd vac. 5 sick days 6 personal days i forget how many holidays.
Good job for driving i would stay if i was not going to try something else. I kinda want to get out of trucking all together

DaveP 03-04-2007 10:59 AM

Live in Alabama and am pulling flatbed for PGT out of the B'ham terminal.

Not ONCE has anyone tried to BS or mislead me about the company OR the job.

That starts with Sue (recruiter) to dispatch, to Fleet Manager (Robbie Robbins), and even to the Southern Regional Manager (David Plummer) who has his office in B'ham.

Great bunch of folks who care about their drivers and their hometime and well-being...really!

Do I work my butt off?

Yep!

Is the money and bennies there?

Yep!

Am I satisfied???

:D

Drive local curtain van for Lowe's. Work all over Western WA.

Pay is OK, bene's are standard as with most companies. I will be leaving

in about 6 weeks for OTR. Going to team with a friend of mine for awhile.

The whole reason I'm leaving, is that management has no clue what there

doing, and I'm sick of not getting 40 hours a week.

fed ex ground, drive for a contractor for now. love it, great hometime, good money, however get 1099. but a good accountant and i keep most of my money, only paid 1000 in taxes this year, kept the rest. no sitting in docks. pull trailers drop trailers, get two more go and drop etc.

Jackrabbit379 03-05-2007 04:12 AM

I work for SYSCO. Why? I dunno. :| Cause I have to. :P
Well, truth is, my dad had a stroke several years ago. I thought, "oh crap!" I was driving for a friend of mine at the time, hauling grain. I ran all over the central north mid-western states. I would leave out in May/June, and come home around October/November. I took a break from that to be closer to dad, and I started working for a local moving company. Allied agent. I was driving locally, but I soon found out that it aint just driving. After a month or so, I started working in the warehouse unloading/loading the LTL trucks. My mom is a nurse, and a patient walked in that was a salesman for SYSCO. Well, he is no longer working here, but one thing led to another, and mom told him about me being a truck driver, and he told her that they were needing drivers. I talked to SYSCO, and I have been here now for 4 years. I am home every night, err, every morning. I'm nocturnal. :P The pay is good, good benefits. I have been scratching an itch ever since I quit driving OTR, but being married now, I reckon I might just stay where I am. One of these days, maybe my wife and I can run OTR. :P

BanditsCousin 03-05-2007 05:34 AM

I work for United Van Lines and love my job. Besides the good workout, I get a sense of accomplishment at the end of a hard day, and i know it really makes a difference moving people where they gotta go.

I also like the $$, the social interraction with helpers/customers, never being overweight (the truck, NOT me lol) and sometimes i even get tips. How many of ya'll get a tip at the loading dock? 8)

But, its a good gig because I don't have to run hard all year.

Thats my story and I'm sticking too it. OTR or local, it all has its +'s and -'s

Rev.Vassago 03-05-2007 06:31 AM

I pull for Graebel Van Lines because I'm too good for United. :P

I don't want to divulge the name of the company just yet for obvious reasons (i'm getting ready to jump ship) but i will eventually.

1) This is OTR and TL local. .46cpm when OTR (this is anything farther than 115 miles one-way) Local is $22.46 and we service a large department store chain; We are the dedicated carrier and that's pretty much all we do except for the occasional OTR backhaul. When local, i work the night shift, anywhere from 4pm to 5am depending on need.

2)Again, i don't want to reveal my exact location for reasons listed above but i'm in the Balto/DC metro area big time.

3)Same as above. ETC.

4)I picked them mainly because they were real close, 10 miles away, so my commuting costs are practically zilch and based on what another driver said about them (should have talked to more drivers). Am i "satisfied?" Well, obviously not else i wouldn't be contemplating jumping ship. But i will say that i don't really have any serious complaints about the company; Easy no-touch freight, basically 99%drop and hook, good tractors. Yes, they are freightliners but these are good. With freightliner it's basically hit or miss wether you're going to get a good one or not. I believe wether or not it's made in Mexico has got alot to do with it. Freightliner is improving regardless though.

My only problem is the hours are irregular and the impression i get is that the company doesn't really care about the need for sleep for a driver. The other thing is i'm not what i would consider getting a good amount of work. I think i should be making $1100-$1400 per week gross. And i'm willing to put in 70 (or more) hours a week.
But other than that, no complaints.

5) It's 99% drop and hook so the trailers are already loaded or unloaded by the time we hook to them.

NE REGIONAL (Home every weekend)

Live in Southern NH

Arnold Transportation

Picked them based on the regional runs, weekend hometime. Equipment has never really been a huge issue for me. But would not go out of my way to drive a hunk of junk. My current truck is an 05' I also never heard anything bad about them. So the no news is good news kinda played into that.

I'm very satisfied. You'll always have days where you'd like to push you DM off a cliff. But you've got to take the good with the bad. They never push me, even ask if I have the hours or can move a load safely within hours, and as of yet have never "diciplined" me for saying no.

I've loaded and unloaded a few times, with a couple of those being assist. But my assist have consisted of 10 minutes worth of work, and those pay $30. Not bad for 10 mins of work. The load/unload has always been with a electric pallet jack. Never taken me longer than 20-30 mins. Those paid me $65.

They pay for lumper on nearly everything that needs to be lumped. I only do it for the money. If it will take me 30 mins or so.. Why not make some extra money. If it's a full load, with massive pallet break downs, then hell no. I'll let the co pay for a lumper while I get my shut eye.

I work for UPS. $27 an hour, $71,000 last year, full benefits at no cost to me, OT after 8 hours in a day, not too much stress, 5 weeks of vacation, and home every night. Won't leave because I'll never find anything this good. Golden handcuffs as we like to say. :D

and I work for UPS too. (brown67 and I seem to follow each other around-hmmmm...must be those "golden handcuffs"...). I drive a "feeder" route servicing the hubs. I am on whats known as a "combo bid" by choice. I am at over $27 per hour with OT after 8 and Double time after 12 as Brown67 has stated. Full health and welfare and a decent pension. I am finishing up my 30th year at Brown and will retire at the end of July 2007. I have run the sleeper teams on my last bid. Pay is around .58cpm split with hourly for both drivers anytime truck stops (drops-hooks-hubs-breakdown-road closures any wait time/pre/post trips etc). It's a good gig. (and I got the "watch"...LOL! -Brown67 will figure it out....)

As you may have assumed Yellow , Great pay , bennies , hometime , equipment (well, not equipment) . If you want to go LTL Yellow is definately one of the best especially after you get a few years in .

ben45750 03-06-2007 10:04 AM

Roadway, at bottom scale right now. Had to survive a layoff but busy now. I will probably get layed of this winter to but should be good after that.

Question for the UPS guys, what division are you in? I know the UPS drivers (feeder's) around Ohio sure don't make that much. There top scale is .54cpm and I think $23.00, which is just a little bit more than Roadway and Yellows top scale.

I work package cars. Feeders (tractor trailer) make $.50 more in base pay plus extra pay if they pull triples. Feeders can pull down $80,000+. I've been full time for 13 years. I started at UPS in 1990 part time while I was in college. Pre-loaded 3 years and then went full time.

We are package division. I think you're talking about UPS freight. They are like the red headed step child of UPS. Don't make anything near what we make, because they are mostly non-union.

Think I got it figured out. My center runs about 60 cars a day. We have 3 feeder routes. 2 of the the feeder drivers have 31 years in and are waiting until the contract is settled to retire. Once they retire I want to move to feeders. Hope I win one of the bids. Think I will, because most guys don't want to work nights. Not sure my body will take another 17 years in package cars til retirement.

ben45750 03-06-2007 07:01 PM

copy that, Thats what I wondered. Didn't know if it was package or freight.

What is it about driving a brown truck that makes people so snotty?

We didn't ask UPS to buy us.

We never needed a union. Our pay is equal to union scale for LTL and we have a fully funded strong pension along with a 50% match on 401k. I am sure we will be teamsters soon though.

At .5415/mile that's equal to $32 per hour running 60 miles per hour. Stops make or break you depending on how long they take.

First year road drivers easily make well over 50k. After three years its 70-90k. Depends on the run you can bid.

As good as UPS? Close but not quite. Red headed step child? Thanks "brother". I hope when I'm a teamster I remember where I came from.

BanditsCousin 03-07-2007 10:59 AM

Okay, maybe i don't make more than the Rev

Don't kid yourself, Snowman. Do you think Leo Suggs woke up one morning and said "Wow it's such a nice day. The sun's shining...the birds are chirping...the flowers are in bloom...hey why don't we hike our drivers pay up to Teamster scale and toss in a traditional defined pension-plan for good measure?" No, it was the union threatening to make a run at Overnite back in 99' that got you that deal. Overnite was forced to up the ante to keep the Teamsters out. That's why all the non-union LTL's like Conway, FedEx, Saia, etc pay close to union scale. If ever the union left the LTL industry at large, then so would I in a heartbeat. Ain't no way I'm gonna sit around for free like those OTR guys do.

You mean that's not how it happened? Next you'll probably tell me there's no Santa Clause either!

:D :D :D :D :D :D

I can't argue there Frosty, when your right , your right. I wasnt around then but I guess it was a long bitter fight. Afterwards Jimmy Hoffa swore he would put us out of business. Ironically, he will ultimately win now that UPS has bought us. Teamsters are negotiating a contract for us as we speak, something from scratch for UPS, not NMFA. Then we vote.

Uh, the post was about each others JOBS...The OP requested information and we gave it to him/her. You say the UPS employees always bring up money. Nope, only when we are asked. Other people here seem to always LOVE to union bash...It works both ways. And yes Brown67, you pretty much figured it out. I did my 12 years in a package car (and the "sort")..Bid feeder, your body will thank you. Nights are cool, hook your set and split, no supervisors breathing down your neck. If someone takes offense to UPS people calling the former Overnite/Motor Cargo fiasco a "red-headed stepchild", well you should have heard what we USED to call you. Personally I think those trucks look a whole lot better painted UPS colors.

Not a good start to a new company, but we'll see how it pans out in a few weeks or even months. I get a few cents a mile but I love the skates. :D

inmate1577 03-10-2007 11:51 PM

I drive for Schneider. No better or worse than any other company. They get me home when I need to, and have run close to home when the time for hometime is coming near. The 2nd shift folks are useless but they dont push drivers to operate in adverse conditions. If there is a bad snowstorm and I dont want to drive in it, I tell 'em and thats it. But whereas folks complain about "not getting the miles" I'm averaging around 2500 miles per week.

I hear alot of independents complain to me about how Schneider undercuts competition, as if I have anything to do with that policy..........as if they are the only company to do it.
