You realize that the vast majority of freight headed to Alaska is on barge or ship don't you?

Crowley Marine, Foss Marine, and Lynden Transport all run barges daily out of Seattle and Portland, for Alaska. Totem Ocean Express runs ships every other day out of Tacoma WA, Portland OR, Oakland CA, Los Angeles/Long Beach, and Honolulu HI. Honolulu Freight also runs ships every other day, out of Los Angeles, Honolulu, and Portland.

The bulk of refer work travels on Totem Ocean, from Tacoma and Oakland. Pull the trailers onto the ship, secure them...pull them off the ship on arrival. About 800 refers per trip.

If you want to work the Alaska route...get your merchant seaman's badge, and work at any of those I mentioned.

Of course...I might be wrong.

I lived and drove in Alaska for 10 years. Most of the freight goes in and out on barge or the Alaska Marine Highway. The Marine Highway stuff will off load in the pan handle or go into the interior from Haines and the north end of the Marine Highway run.

If you have an itch to go to Alaska, just cut thru the clutter and get on with an outfit in Alaska. The pay has always been really top notch and the working conditions are not bad. If it weren't that I had to come back to Iowa and take over the family farm, I would still be up there. I started as a flunky know nothing driver in the early 80's at $28 and hour. Can only imagine what it's paying now. Also the DOT rules on hours of service are different. 15 hour driving rule for instance. Why play games down in the Lower 48?
