Default Where you live makes a difference..for newbies

I just talked to a recruiter at Schneider. My plan was to ditch my apartment and live on the road. Being single and no kids It doesn't make sense to being paying rent on a place to crash for 3 or 4 days a month. What I didn't know is that companies will only hire you if you live within certain zip codes. I have some friends that I could have stayed with during down time, but they are 30 miles out of the zone for Schneider, so they won't even consider me. I pretty much need to get an apartment within their hiring zip codes to be a player with them, which defeats the purpose of ditching the apartment. So, now I'm back to square one trying to find a decent training company. If there's any other single drivers out there that don't maintain an apartment or house I'd like to hear who you hired on with. Any other feedback is appreciated.

Jim

Have you considered a rented address? I know some places you can rent a box, but the address you get is a street address and not a PO box number. So for address purposes it looks like a normal address. You might try a google search to see if someone near you offers a service like this.

EDIT: I notice your name is NevadaJim, so the next suggestion maybe right up your alley if you already live in NV.

Or if your not attached to a particular area I know there are places in NV that offer this service so that you can claim NV as your residence to take advantage of the tax advantages. BOL

Using this website's job search will isolate what companies hire from where you live.

I wish that was the case. Like I said in my post, Schneider wouldn't entertain my application based on "zip code", not state. They were very specific about zip code.

Yes, I'm using one right for when I was living overseas. It gives me a street address, rather than just a PO Box #. I really don't understand why Schneider uses zip codes. If I park a rig in the terminal why would they care if I have to drive 70 miles to get where I want to be to spend my day(s) off? I didn't think that once you hire on that they now have a claim to where you actually take your down time. I can see having control over your duty time but to have control over what I do on free time seems a little gestapo-like. Anyway, I will just keep on making phone calls until I find someone that is a bit flexible in where I live. Thanks

Companies only hire drivers from areas where they have customers, or that live along some major freight lanes. They generally do not care if you are willing to drive 50 or 500 miles to the nearest terminal and then back home again as your hometime comes around. They do not want their drivers worn out by the time they report for work and they know that sooner or later that is going to get old for the driver and s/he is going to be begging to take the rig home and then the company has added expense for fuel, maintence, etc that they would not have if they kept their drivers within the areas where they do the most business.

This applies if you have 0 experience or 25 years experience, and in many cases this also applies for O/O's too.

CFI doesn't hire out of Vegas either. If anyone has any company leads that hire out of Vegas please drop me a line. Thanks!
