Default split shift?

I'm starting a new position for a postal carrier where I will drive for 5hrs, then drop my trailer, go off duty or sleeper for 12, then drive back the 5-6 hours back to my original location. Do I log it as it looks, or with the hos rules is this not allowed..............Basicly I leave at 9pm and return at 9pm the following day.

Log it as you do it. Since you are going to be off duty for at least 10 hours you will not be in violation of the 14 hour rule. Anytime you have at least a 10 hour break you fully reset the 14 hour clock as well as the 11 hour driving clock assuming you have the hours available on your 70 hour rule.

for the reply, I've worked local for so long now with just straight hours, that with this new gig i was not sure....Here is a new question, does not relate to me, if somebody started at midnight and drove for 11 hours, then took 10 hours off, with the 14 hour rule you technically could drive for 3 hours more and get 14 total drive hours in a 24 hour period. Is that possible or am i off base. Now i realize with the 70 hr rule you would run out of hours quick....................

The regs are not based on any 24 hour period.

Like I said before.....every time you take a 10 hour break you reset the 11 and 14 hour rule.

So yes...you could come on at midnight after a 10 hour break....drive to 11 am......go on break until 9 pm and then drive another 11 hours and you would end up recording on that days log 14 hours of drive time and never be in violation of the 11 or 14 hour rule.

Also any time you take at least 34 consecutive hours off the 70 hour rule can be reset.

Uturn thanks again, I think where i get confused is trying to base everything on a 24 hour period, but you cleared it up for me...Part time dweller, the pay is based on the run, but generally it is between 19-22.00 an hour. This run i have to sit for 12 hrs which is not paid. This is the 2nd contractor i've worked for doing this, a good time to get your foot in the door is around november when they need extra drivers for xmas......

pushnpull, I was just wondering if you gave the 12 hours away for free.

As far as getting my foot in the door, as you say, thanks, but there is no way I would take a job like that. :lol: I don't have to sleep in a box or babysit someones truck in my off time.

Why not go to Fed Ex or Con Way and make that hourly wage not have to spend 12 hours in a truck for free? :?

Part time dweller, you are right as i am giving them 12 hrs for free, but it's the post office's schedule we adhere to, not the company i'll be working for who contracts the work. They hired me as fulltime, but have only been able to give 2 runs a week, so i do not know if i will continue...
