canada

I just wanted to know does anybody make runs into Canada? I heard there are some restrictions. For example they say, you cannot bring laptops into the country and if you have a criminal background then they will take you to jail, because they say that you served your time in the U.S. but not in Canada. They also say that they check your truck at the checkpoint and are there any special permits that you might need to run through Canada?

I just got this in an email from Gallop Logistics.

Dear Stephen Booth,

Have you ever wondered what a US Driver needs to get into Canada? Here's the answer...

Documents a driver needs to have with them in the truck before crossing into CANADA:

Drivers License
Carrier insurance copy
Bill of ladings for the Correct Consignee (if needed Original Inspection)
Two pieces of Photo ID
(Driver(s) do not need a Passport yet to cross into Canada)
(Driver(s) must be legal and must not have any out standing warrants)

What the Carrier/Drivers need to do when he/she gets to the border:

If it is the first time the driver crossing the border and driver needs to go into Canadian Customs and fill out a 77YY Manifest with Canadian Agent. This form will allow the carrier /driver to enter a total of 5 times for the year. Canadian Customs tracks it, so the carrier will not be able to cross more then 5 times. The Canadian Customs will give the Carrier/Driver an Application to Transact carrier Operations at Point of Arrival in Canada to fill out and they can fax it on the spot or take it back to there office and fill it out and fax it @ a later date.

Or

If the Carrier knows they will be running into Canada before they pick up the load, they can fill out an Application to Transact Carrier Operations at point of Arrival in Canada.
You can call any Customs Agent and they have the form, or you can contact Gallop Logistics. The Carrier must fill it out and fax it to the Department of National Revenue Customs and Excise in Ottawa, Ont. Once the carrier fills out the form and faxes it, they will be contacted or faxed back the Application and you will receive a Carrier code. Once you have a Carrier code you can purchase Par Stickers. Par stickers are a code with your Carrier code # on it and you attach it to the bill of ladings of your order that you are delivering into Canada. The good thing is you can fax the bill of ladings to the border with your Par Sticker on the bill of ladings 24 hours to 3 hours before you cross. It makes it an easy and faster for the drivers to cross the border. If you are planning onto run into Canada more than five times a year, the best way is to Apply for your Carrier Code.

Any questions or concerns please contact Gallop Logistics 1-800-263-0037 or the US Transceiver at 1-800-527-0665.

All 100% bullshit. Except the criminal background part. Even a DUI will deny you access.

With the exception of DUI, the US is much more strict than Canada.

Every so often US customs gives my GF a hard time, because she has no job and is not a student. "technically, she's inadmissable" they say. Yet shes crossed 200+ times!

You will find it much more difficult to get back into the U.S., if you are an American citizen, than to get into Canada. Talking to Canadian drivers, they experience the same thing on their side of the border. As long as your paperwork is in order at the border and everything has been cleared prior to your arrival, you should not have any problems. You DON'T want to have a gun in your truck when you cross into Canada. They don't have a sense of humor about that sort of thing. It is best to either use a debit or credit card while there, if you need to make any purchases. You will get a better exchange rate and if you get Canadian dollars there is little you can do with it on this side of the fence. Most Canadian businesses will take U.S. dollars, but U.S. businesses won't take Canadian dollars. If you use U.S. dollars, they will give you Canadian back. As long as you obey the rules, you should not have any problems. I used to go up several times a year and have always been treated well. One thing, however, they may not allow you to use their rest rooms, so make preparations. I used to deliver to this outfit in Toronto and they would not allow anyone to use the restrooms who didn't work there. In fact, everything was highly secured with a fence in the receiving area. Most everyone was Hispanic who worked in receiving except the manager. I usually preferred to stop at the Canadian truck stops, but Flying J has been busy building facilities in-country so you may feel more at home. You may want to give your truck an extra look over to make sure everything is working properly and in good shape. Otherwise, you should enjoy your visit. Well, everything except the border crossings. Those can take some time, especially at Windsor (Detroit).

You won't be taken to Jail if you have a past criminal record that has been taken care of. You just won't be allowed into Canada.
