Just wondering your guys thoughts on this, I got into to Canada, and I DO have a little, er ah hiccup on my record.
Let me explain, its nothing big, I foolishly took a day in jail to pay for a traffic ticket fine about 20 years ago when I was very young. My mom was dying of cancer at the time, and I was very young and depressed. I wasnt working, had the ticket, and didnt want to ask her for the $
This is the ONLY type of offense I have ever had, and USX sent me up to Vancouver to P/U , I went in to apply for entry, and he checked me out, and checked, he wouldnt give me an answer for about 2 hours, and I was wondering, 'whats up?'
So he comes back and ask's why were you finger printed? Apparently since the crime I was jailed for, a stop sign infraction, bumbed up from an infraction to a mistameaner to serve time, the US government would not disclose to him.
I replied to him the only thing I have EVER had on my record was serving one day for a traffic ticket I didnt pay, he said hmmm bench warrent (it wasnt, but I just said yes) he said ok your good.....so really it seems so much up to their discretion I think, and how you rub them so to speak.

Felonies are a definite no, no if you plan on crossing the border. They also don't seem to like DUI's. It would be a good idea to have a notarized copy of your birth certificate with you, along with your CDL. The last few times I went into Canada they kept asking me for a birth certificate. I finally got one and haven't been asked for it since. Go figure.

A birth certificate and drivers licence is required for crossing both ways from canada to US or US to canada.
They don't always ask for both peices of ID, but they can refuse entry if you don't provide both drivers licence and birth certificate!

A passport or FAST card are better ID and are preffered by border guards.
Drivers with FAST cards and FAST approved loads and FAST approved carriers can use the special FAST lane to bypass any lineups in the regulars lanes.

Passports will be required to cross into the US by land sometime between jan 2008 and june 2009, the US hasn't announced the exact date yet!
They will be required for anyone crossing into the US by land.

Right now passports are required for anyone coming into the USA by air!

That laptop crap is BS, anyone can bring a laptop across the border.

There is also limits on how much tobaco and liquor you can bring across the border.

And mace and pepper spray and stun guns are illegal in canada too.

The only thing about the lap-top thing being referenced is possibly that comming back into the US customs will want to see it?
I came back from Asia a couple months ago, and when they saw the lap-top the customs agent requested (actually insisted) on seeing it and checking all files onit delaying me for two hours...go fiqure.

They were probably looking for kiddie porn files. Not saying it was because of you but alot of the travel to some of those countries is not purely for buisness.

Yeah, Steve, I agree with everyone. When you go up into Canada, be sure to have your VISA, and your Master Card. :P

They also said no American Express.

I think I will tend to believe the Canadian and US customs officials who I called. License ONLY until next year BOTH WAYS and no stickers required for up to 5 trips. No felonies also.

Ahh man. Gonna have to get an American Express :P
