I've been in and out of Canada a number of times with no problems. I don't think they'll take you to jail, just deny you entry.
Make sure your paperwork is in order. This means having the load precleared through customs by your freight broker prior to your arrival at the border. If you're an O/O trying to do this on your own, I'd school up on it first. |
I'd like to see some proof on not allowing laptops.

Get the Canada Customs Carrier Ciode and the PARS stickers. And if you're feright back into the US, you'll need a SCAC code and PAPS stickers.

Most ports are now mandatory e-manifest. Yet another "fax and wait" situation. |
You can take laptops into Canada from the States and vice versa. I agree with Gman, as long as all your paperwork is in order and your company's as well you'll have no problems. When I lived in Canada you had to make sure of the same when I came into the States. I do runs up there now from the States and don't have any problems. Your attitude when you hit the border makes a difference too remember. One thing though Gman, I've found companies on both sides of the border that don't let drivers use their washrooms. There only for company employees. Some companies have found that some drivers don't care how theiy treat others facilities. Seeing what I've seen I know that to be true. Drive safe everyone. :)

Has anyone been to Canada recently? I'm wondering because I may have a load to AB but from what I read you need 2 forms of photo ID which I don't have. I only have my drivers license and my passport is at home.

I'v never posed as an alien but I imagine a birth cert and drivers liscence would be enough. Best to call the border and ask.
Do you have a Canada Customs Carrier Code and PARS stickers? And your SCAC code and PAPS stickers for your reload back into the US? |
Steve, due to the new regs that went into effect the first of this year, you are required to have a passport to get back into the country after going to Canada or Mexico now. So if you're planning on going, you better stop by the house first.
|
Not true. You don't need a passport. I called up Canadian customs and passports won't be needed until next year. As far as Mexico, I was there today with only a drivers license.
You don't need any stickers or anything special to go into Canada. You can make 5 trips per year. Any more than that you need to get the stickers. They don't need 2 forms of picture ID either until next year and that will be your drivers license and passport. Doesn't matter. The load was gone before I could bid on it. In earlier posts on this thread I posted what is required to go into Canada and the customs officials confirmed it except for the 2 photo ID's which you don't need just yet and by the way, those are to get back into the U.S. and not to go into Canada. |
Steve,
True enough about the 5 trips, but IMO you may as well get the stickers because they don't cost that much and you never know when you're going to get a sweet multi load deal. And with your newfound interest in foriegn women....well anything can happen. Secondly, I'm not sure the 5 trip deal applies to reentry into the US. (maybe it does...just don't know). Finally, some of those western provinces don't like spread axle trailers. Gotta have a permit for manitoba and you're limited to ~10,000lbs per axle IIRC. |
