Funny Thing

I drive for a local outfit and make really good money doing it. The thing I'm writing about that is so funny is how alot of you OTR drivers think were in a race.

I could care less if you pass me. I'm getting paid by the hour, no matter how long I take to get the loads done. Granted, I need to get the job done in a timely manner but If you want to pass me, please, by all means, be my guest. As for me, I'm going to drive safe, not fast.

Maybe if you were being paid by the mile you may think differently

VitoCorleone99 07-02-2007 11:09 PM

I actually find the day cab guys to be the most eager to pass. They can't pass on the open road, so they blow through construction zones and urban areas at 65mph or wherever they are governed.

Why do miles get shorter in length , the faster you go?

6th grade math lesson?

(55mph * 11 hours = 605 miles) * 33cpm = $199.65
(70mph * 11 hours = 770 miles) * 33cpm = $254.10

According to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity the faster you go the slower time gets.

So while the distance does not change the time it takes to go from point to point takes less time the faster you travel.

However, I'm not sure Einstein got it right and even if he did I don't think you would see the effect in your 18 wheeler. :D

One other thing about the Theory of Relativity. Weight increases as you go faster so you might be over weight.

Now back to the real discussion. :D

I will say honestly that I've had no problems so far with local SF drivers- so I'm assuming that that's where you're local (your profile).

But the local drivers in New Jersey scare the crud out of me. As do the ones down in L.A.

Then again, a lot of otr drivers scare me these days. Shiver.

The whole concept that us otr drivers are in a race is kind of silly. What bothers me about this attitude is that the REASON it may look like the otr guys are trying to get by you so fast is because they KNOW that the guys who are going slower tend to stay out in the passing lane. It can be really frustrating when all you want to do is go down the road but you have to jockey with a guy who won't be courteous and move over. That, IMO, is when things get dangerous.

Well said. Slower traffic needs to move right, regardless of the type of vehicle. There are a good number of idiots, mainly senior citizens on I-20 here in Dallas, who are very rude and just camp themselves out in the far left lanes doing 60-65mph unaware or uncaring of faster traffic dodging 3 lanes to go around them. It would be nice for Tx DPS to write hefty tickets to these goofs and revoke their license for a second offense. As far as the idea of slow and fast drivers reaching their destination at the same time, that doesn't work with every driver. I have passed scores of schneiders,J.b hunts, and Swifts and made it 2 hours early to the receiver and unloaded when one of them was just pulling in. Like another poster said,I have also seen local AND Otr governed trucks blow thru 55mph const. zones and 45mph town zones at 67mph. Yellow,Fedex, and Swift seem to be the worst.

married to the road 07-03-2007 05:19 AM

I have had many of the UPS feeder trucks fly by me, even in states like IL of OH where it is 55 mph in the whole state, and I am governed at around 67 and will be doing max and still can't keep up!

Kenan Advantage - Fuel Delivery

T * Storm 07-03-2007 07:11 AM

BTW - I understand if I were in the fast lane, but being in the slow lane or 1 away from the slow land so I can move on down the road without having to apply my brakes every time theres an on ramp, but why do these morons get up behind me and tailgate when theres a clear lane directly to my lfet with no oncoming vehicles? I won't even bit*h about the "all truck use left lane" on the 880 SB just past 5th street. I am going slow and I realize if you pass youre asking for a ticket.

also BTW it's not all OTR, its also the local freight haulers comming out of the the Oakland docks. And not all OTR or freight haulers are offensive and dangerous. I realize that the Arco fuel haulers love to kick a*s with their 8k gallons on 87 octane in the back.

A mile is still 5280 feet, no matter how fast you go. I think you need to revisit a remedial math program.

Then again, anyone who speeds is generally stupid anyway.

Yep, I feel the same way. I find most "local" daycab drivers to be more aggressive than even four-wheelers....especially around Atlanta.

When i drove a daycab pullin a tank i used to fly around cuz i had 3 loads a day to do. Took around 9-10hrs a day. One day i hauled ass all day and timed my self the next day i did right around the speed limit all i saved was around 15-20min. So i slowed down drivin like a nut was not worth the time plus i got paid by the hr so it didnt matter.

Yup, and your body didn't feel so beat up, your nerves were calmer....and in general you probably felt better...right?

I discovered all of that a while back....and nowadays, I kinda just mosey along....and whats really interesting is that I have BBR's and Cheekin' Hawlers blowing past me all day long....and I have had them end up passing me 5 or six times in the same day....and I have pulled in to a truck stop or rest area at the end of the day....and they pull in behind me.... :? Go figure, huh??

Actually, here's one of the reasons why they ended up behind me: The faster you go, the higher the rate of vibration in the truck, and also it would appear that the frequency of the vibration is elevated, and it would seem that all that vibrating has a detrimental effect on the bladder's ability to retain fluid.....thereby causing more pit stops.

Rather than chance a speeding ticket...its easier just to "mosey along", and yet actually get there at the same time...or ahead of the mob. In an 11 hour day, I generally only make 2 stops before the end o the day, and I'm not worn out at the end of the day, hint, hint... 8)

BORN2DRIVE 07-04-2007 09:54 AM

I drive for a company that runs me local, in a day cab. But, they also run me OTR at times. I drive the speed limit no matter which one I'm running. Day cabs and OTR trucks pass me all the time like I'm sitting still. So, I don't think you can really stereo-type drivers by the kind of truck their driving.

jegzus 07-04-2007 10:50 AM

I hate when slow vehicles are in the fast lane or the middle lane and wont move over. I also have disproved the idea that going driving faster doesn't get you there much quicker than doing the speed limit.

Where I drive a matter of minutes means breezing through a normally congested area and sitting in traffic for 20+ minutes at a clip. I have two loads to do a day and I normally use 12-14 hours to do them. If I did the speed limit I would be over hours most of the time. I'm also the guy finding detours around traffic which has saved me more time than anything.

And I also resent the statement that people that speed are idiots anyway. I speed and I'll tell you that I am far from an idiot. But I have a job to do and I will not be late for my appointment. And leaving earlier is not an option, I have set times I can deliver for both of my loads and if I chew up hours by leaving earlier and sitting then I am screwed for my second load.

Guess you should look for an hourly paying job then. If you have to break the law by speeding to get two loads a day done, then there is a problem.

I had an hourly paying job driving tri-axle and guess what... the boss would tell me to drive faster because I had more loads to do. And cut the crap about breaking the law... I go past PA,NJ,NY troopers all the time at 72 and they don't even look at me.....and the rest of the vehicles on the road.

So. You pass a state trooper doing 72 in a 65. YOU ARE STILL BREAKING THE LAW!!!!!. Let us know when you get your first speeding ticket in a truck so you can come here and whine about it.

LOL yeah ok guy, why don't you worry about blocking the flow of traffic by staying in the middle lane "obeying the law".

I'm sorry but I don't drive in the middle lane in your area. I know what traffic you are talking about and yes, two minutes does make a difference, but having to break the law to get your job done is nonsense. I would be looking for a new job before I would even consider jepordizing my CDL just to do a job.

jegzus 07-04-2007 12:00 PM

I have had several cdl jobs and I have yet to find one that I can drive the speed limit and keep the boss and my wallet happy. I would love to find one but I have bills to pay and I like this job for the most part.

72 in a 65. WOW. What a lawbreaker. 7 over the limit is practically nothing in most states unless they are having a crackdown. Otherwise, you can get away with 10 over for the most part.

Try something other then rock hauling and cement hauling. Foodservice is hourly and we don't have to speed to get the route down. I know some do but that is just the way they drive. I can leave with 12 stops, 700 cases and still be done in 8-10 hours with out having to speed. Fridays I do a double trip, one stop, reload and then 9-11 more and still am done in 9 hours. Try the grocery huals also, they drive slow.

By the way, nice sig line:

Running with the hammer down really don't do you any good if you end up with the rubber side up.

BORN2DRIVE 07-04-2007 12:17 PM

When I come into a city when the traffic is real heavy, and I know I have to make a left turn: I drive in the left lane. I'd rather already be there than have to try to change lanes in all that craziness. As long as I'm moving at a decent speed(speed limit or slightly under) I don't see a problem.

The line in my sig refers to the garbage haulers around here that flip over on I80 in delaware water gap at least once every six months. People that drive 7-10 over the speed limit are not running with the hammer down in my opinion.
