weight of 1 gallon of diesel

anybody know this. I always guess at 7 pounds/gallon. I was very close on weight the other day and almost out of fuel. Just wondering if anybody knows the accurate weight of diesel.

Ridge Runner 06-18-2007 09:17 PM

The rule of thumb is 8# / gallon.

Twilight Flyer 06-18-2007 09:18 PM

I think it's 8.2?

#2 fuel oil (which I deliver) weighs approximately 7.2 pounds per gallon. Red dyed diesel fuel sometimes is rebranded as #2 fuel oil (heating oil) because the specs overlap. I assume the weight is very close.

I was told 7.2 lbs. I know it's under 8 but figure on 8 lbs per gallon to be safe as Ridge said because the weight can change between summer and winter months and other factors that are above my head.

Twi, water is 8.3 lbs

Twilight Flyer 06-18-2007 10:20 PM

Yeah, I just asked someone here....I stand corrected. 8)

Doesnt it depend on the temperatureas to the actual weight?

yoopr 06-19-2007 02:13 AM

I always figured for 7#s a gallon but I guess I figured wrong. It was close enough though

Jackrabbit379 06-19-2007 07:17 AM

I always guessed it was about 8 lbs a gallon.
