Funny you say they look like crap....they ARE crap! But...it isn't as bad as it looks....
Here's how I'd do it:
From plattsburgh, take I-87N to exit 42. Go N on US-11, and bear right across the bridge to VT-78. Follow 78 to I-89S, and run that to Concord, NH. From there, I-93N to exit 15, follow I-393 until it turns into US-4. Run US-4 all the way over to I-95. I-95 to 295, north to US-4E, to Rockland.
This is 49 miles longer than the shortest route possible, but far better roads, especially this time of year.
If pain is your kind of thing, here's the hard way......
I-89s to exit 8, follow US-2 east to Gorham, NH. From there, take NH-16s to redstone, NH and follow US-302 E to 202S to ME-25E to I-95, to 295 to US-4.....
Now, get your measuring tape out...if your truck and trailer combo is LONGER than 72', you will need an overlength permit regardless of routes traveled, just to enter VT legally. If you are less than 72', you can travel through VT with a 53, as long as you stick to the highlighted routes in your atlas, or within 1 mi....
Good luck!!!
