Default Plattsburg, NY to Rockland, ME????

This is a little out of my normal area. I looked at the map for 15 minutes and I still have no idea how to get there from here with a 53' trailer. Those roads look like crap.

Anyone know that area?

Funny you say they look like crap....they ARE crap! But...it isn't as bad as it looks....

Here's how I'd do it:

From plattsburgh, take I-87N to exit 42. Go N on US-11, and bear right across the bridge to VT-78. Follow 78 to I-89S, and run that to Concord, NH. From there, I-93N to exit 15, follow I-393 until it turns into US-4. Run US-4 all the way over to I-95. I-95 to 295, north to US-4E, to Rockland.

This is 49 miles longer than the shortest route possible, but far better roads, especially this time of year.

If pain is your kind of thing, here's the hard way......

I-89s to exit 8, follow US-2 east to Gorham, NH. From there, take NH-16s to redstone, NH and follow US-302 E to 202S to ME-25E to I-95, to 295 to US-4.....

Now, get your measuring tape out...if your truck and trailer combo is LONGER than 72', you will need an overlength permit regardless of routes traveled, just to enter VT legally. If you are less than 72', you can travel through VT with a 53, as long as you stick to the highlighted routes in your atlas, or within 1 mi....

Good luck!!!

The first thing I would do is open this pdf file and then save it on my hard drive. Actually, I already did do that. The first thing you should do is save the pdf file. It distills a bunch of weird rules into a few red and blue lines. Very handy.

As for going from Plattsburgh to the east, up to US-11 and across at the top of the state onto VT-78 (as mentioned before) is about your best bet. I've run US-2 and US-302 into Maine before. They're not bad as long as you're not terribly heavy and the weather is decent. Twists and turns and hills and such, but not too terrible. If you're heavy or it's snowing, then I would take the long way and stick with the big roads.

I've run across this area my whole life having been born in Northern Vermont. The first route that was given you is about the best that you can do this time of the year. It's what I would run, I think. I've never had a cop bother me on us-78 through Swanton onto I89 although you do need a permit to run this connection with a 53. I've done it hundreds of times and never have been stopped. Thats up to you, though.

thanks alot to all of you....and I saved the PDF. I highly doubt that the load will pay enough to make a 405 mile trip through that hell....one way.
