No that is not a particularly large class, but they're going to need several trucks. If they are trying to pull that off with less than about three trucks - and three instructors - then you won't get enough time at the wheel.

3800$ is about right. Your local community college can do it a lot cheaper, though. I couldn't get into a class at the local community college, so I paid about $3500. But there were only two of us in class.

I'm looking at SAGE @ Ivy Tech in Indpls. Their current class only has 6 members. SAGE also guarantees 1 on 1 road time. The cost is $3995 plus expenses.

I took a class at a local place about a year ago and we started with 23 students. After DOT physicals and drug tests, we were down to 17 after 2 days of class. Then we lost another 2 students because they couldn't obtain their CDL permit for one reason or another.

We had 4 trucks and 4 instructors for 15 students, 3 of the trucks had 4 students and the instructor for a total of 5 and my truck (we had the highest written scores) had 3 students and an instructor for a total of 4.

We each got about 2 - 3 hours a day of driving time plus time on the backing range and what not. The place I went to was not a PTDI certified school though, so your experience should vary. Total cost for the class plus any DMV fees and other fees was just under $3000.

$5800 is a little steep. You can do it for alot less if you look around. I wouldn't pay anything more than $4000.

If the school is PTDI certified you should not have any problems getting hired.

I went to Sage in Cheyenne, WY. There were 3 students in my class, and at the time they had 2 trucks, so we had plenty of drive time. Not totally sure what the cost was, I managed to get the state to pay for it, but there are alot of hoops to jump through. Might be worth looking into if you are out of work and are unable to find a job.

DevilDice went to SAGE in San Antonio, TX, think he mention around $3500-$4K was the cost. From what I hear the SAGE schools are a plus. I'd goto it if I could afford it but I am leaning toward CFI so far.
