It says that you cannot be missing an arm, foot, or hand, etc but I met a driver at a TA once who had lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident and now had an $8000 metal one! I guess a doctor would have to clear you for something like that right? he worked for one of the large otr van companies where he didn't have to do much but drive.

For certain conditions you can apply to the FMCSA for waivers or Skills Performance Evaluation Certificates. Loss of a limb is one such condition.

What about Cerebral Palsy (sp?)?

We had a guy that came in for a refresher course to go work for a company who hadn't driven in over 6 years who had severe cerebral palsy. He had a very hard time getting in and out of the truck, he had one eye that just kinda rolled around in his head, obviously not useful vison wise... and he could barely keep grasp of the gear shifter.

How is he cleared to drive a truck by the standards set forth in the FMSCA Medical info posted in those links up there?

I'd say thats shocking but seeing alot of these obese drivers trying to get into /out of the truck, the CP guy is probably in better shape than the "buffet bandits"
