Default New to board.

Hello all. I just got my CDL A. I trained at my local college's program. I am in Northeast Pa. So basically I am looking to know who would be good to work for that accepts a driving school grad with no former CDL experience. Here's my catch. I am not looking to go OTR. I would like some home time. Weekends would surely be nice. Am I being too picky being a newb or is this realistic? Anyone get regional or dedicated runs out of school? I am not looking to drive a million miles for big $ yet anyhow...I'd be happy making enough to keep afloat for a while. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!! I do have acceptance letters from Werner(but I think they only have OTR) and US Express so far if that helps. I have to start working soon and want to use my CDL!

Heres another silly question....Would any carrier allow you to take a motorcycle with you on any runs??? I imagine it wouldnt be allowed but just thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance all!!!

Hey JT where are you in NE PA? Also how old are you because that can be a factor in who you can work for.

It is very possible to get a regional position right out of school and that will get you home pretty much every weekend for at least 36 hours. You can try the smaller mom and pop operations around here as they may take you fresh out of school.

As far as taking your gsxr with you, that isn't a posability but it sure would be nice wouldn't it.

I am in Wilkes-Barre area. I am 32 years old. I have a squeaky clean driving record..well the past 11 years anyway. If only I could take my GSXR, that would make me a happy driver..especially on my down time! Any hints on any of the mom&pop places to check?

Well you have some good things going for you being 32 and an 11 year clean driving record. Two places I would start my search is Martini trucking and Bolus freight. They both have regional and local runs and I think they accept recent grads.

If those don't work out try Schnieder, they have a terminal about half hour away from you so you may even be able to get a local run.

And trust me a I feel you about the whole taking the bike along deal. That would make me want to go back out over the road just to ride on some of the great twisties through out the country. 8)

Welcome to the board. Greetings from Nanticoke.(Actually, Wanamie)
Martini does require 2 years, but Bolus might take you. I would not
work for them. They're cheap bastards, but their recruiter is a good guy.
Name is Joe Grasso, Know him from Campos. Good luck to you.

Where you to work? I have no Idea for you there. As for the Bike? I seen it before. Yes I seen a Bike behind the sleeper of the truck. But it was an extended frame on the truck. So do not hold your breath for that.

Good Luck

I grew up in Wanamie! Small world isn't it? Thanks for the replies! I lived on East Main down by the fire station. Where is Bolus based out of?

Bolus is up on Keyser in Scranton.
FYI, I live on East Main, just across the hose house.
Small world, indeed.

I have no real advice to offer you about the starting company. I didn't start like most. I started with (and still drive for) a company that my uncle works for and has interest in. I never went to driving school, I did drive 6000 gallon straight truck tankers in the air force though.

anyway.......I have considered taking my bike (02 R1) and the boss said its ok, but I realized it is pointless for me. I don't have down time short of 2 or 3 hours before bed at a dealer to unload or something (boats). I run OTR I guess, but never gone more than 7 days and usually only 4 or 5. I run out loaded and then dead head home.

maybe look in to DM Bowman, seen their adds, and if i recall they hire grads, and offer both local positions and home weekend positions.
