They can be drilled and locked to a mirror bracket, but if a thief wants anything, they will get it, and theres nothing you can do about it....lolOriginally Posted by The Killer Rabbit

It is a very good antenna, and unlike some of the others like it, the striker is a solid core antenna with a welding tip type of rod coming out of the coil. Very hard to break, and guaranteed for life. They can handle any amount of power you can throw at it. I have used all types in the last 30 yrs, and my only choice is the striker. Go to OK city in the old TA and ask for TOM, and tell him Outlaw sent you, might get a deal...lol
Hey, what happened to spell check....lol
I can attest to that...those things are solid to the core...id be afraid to lose one of those to a thief as one of my other antennas got ripped off my truck only to be replaced by the thiefs old antennae... lol...i can laugh about it now.I know the guy that makes the striker and I have only used them for years now. So with what you said, you cant go any higher then 600 watts due to the coax anyways.
Thats a pretty big lesson learned, as you see alot of antennas at the TA/Pilots out there boasting 5000 watt antennas...hmm
Are there differances that one should look for in coax then as far as brand?
What other things can i do to boost my range besides a linear.
I already have my radio peaked.
TKR
There is alot to know about coaxial cable and its conectors, there is solid core or stranded and single shield braided and double sheild, solid double sheild to alot of stuff, all can make a difference, I don't want to go into great detail because kc0iv will be watching, he be the guru of all .... anyway there is a chart here at my fav site qsl.net, tthis chart shows the cable and the wattage, so now if you use rg-58 wire for a single antenna it can handle 300 - 400 watts, now tthe connectors, them cheap ones can handle 500 or so watts, if you run power then one must use the right connectors that can handle 2000+ watts and nott thhem cheap ones, some connectors can cost up to $10 each so wew wont talk about that, just stick to coaxial cable for now... connectors are a whole world apart and most amatuer radio operators don'tt know that a connector is what connects the coax to the unit and the antenna...Originally Posted by The Killer Rabbit

now on this chart it shows that rg-8x or mini 8 its called can handle 875 watts, we are looking at the first row or the 30mhz range, cb is 27 mhz so close enough, as you notice tthe higher the frequency the less power it can handle in the coax, this is alot more info to tetchnical to explain but my friends at beldon havee a pdf file you can read and it explains all about how its made to why and how it performs, like one thing is the signal runs down thee outside of the innerr wire, so some say solid core is better and some say the more strands in the core the bettter, I won't say which is better for signals but for power the morer strands you have the less power loss, IE: welding cable is better to hook up your power inverter than battery cable, less power loss because of the several hundend strands it has..... but for signals hehehehe I won't say.... ask kc0iv maybe he has a opinion on that one...
as for getting out better and your radio is already tweaked well not much else you can do but run a amp for power or get a power mod done on your cb like a 25 watt mod but thats a whole other story their too... so for now check this link for the table chart of cable power, it also shows the db loss per 1oo feet, so check this... ohhh the first number is db loss, not to worry unless you run like 500 feet or more of wire its useless to know... so it looks like "0.8....350 " so that .8 is the db loss and the 350 is watts in the chart..

now for the everything you ever wanted to know about coaxial cablee and how and why it works and the making of, beldin wire, which is my wire of choice to use ... they have this pdf file about coax so check itt out , its a pdf file so acrobat is needed to view it..

I almost aways write my text in notepad then log-in and cut & paste my text in Notepad. Then look to see if their is any spelling errors any correct those errors. Then I do a preview to make sure everything looks good. Make any corrections. Preview again. Then hit submit.

When someone wants to run power (which I don't agree with) connectors are a very important part of an installation. Along with using the BEST coax and proper installation and weather proofing.
There is a good article on the proper installation of PL-259's at http://www.eham.net/articles/5071 For you uglymutt you might want to look at http://www.eham.net/ they have a lot of good information.
Skin effect is greatly reduced by using stranded coax. As an example: A number 10 gauge wire has a DC resistance of around 25 ohms. At 10 mhz that same wire would have a AC (effective) resistance of 2.182K ohms. Meaning a loss of about 87 times greater. It would be even worse at 27 mhz. I didn't take the time to do the calculation for 27 mhz.
I won't go into it any farther. Remember the last time we talked other got all upset about the discussion.

I had my Stryker mounted b4 i went to Wilson wich doesnt like to see modified antenna mounts and biggol antenna 'errays' on their trucks. I was Extremely happy w/ a Stryker- It was like night and day! Reception was very clear, i talked 10 miles with a stock 29 and didnt even have the gate open all the way! I think he charged $65 or so and I think it was worth it.
